?>k lEatcfctan ano Sou?ljrai WEDNESDAY, OCT. 7, 1896. SEPTEMBER. Purple asters here at last ! And thistle-seed a-blowing ! And what is this m the blackbird's song ? The locusts pipe it shrill and long, Over and over : "Past-past-past The sommer days are going !" Stay, chattering squirrel 1 Why this fret For hoard you're sure to gather ? And cooning spinner, why so soon A shroud to weave-a last cocoon ? The bitter frost is far off yet, Though summer days are going. Perhaps (v,bo knows ?) to graes and fern Comes bitter pang in turning From youth to age. Perhaps tbe wood Rebels agaiost a faded hood, And would escape if it could ; And that with wrath the sumacs burn, When summer days are going ! -Jane March Parker in the Outlook. Southern and Seaboard. The Former About to Swal low the Latter BALTIMORE, Oct. 2 -The sale of the Seaboard Air Line system to the Southern Railway company was talk? ed of on the stock exchange to-day, and in quarters usually informed it is believed that the former property may pass into thc hands of the latter company. It is alleged that proposals to buy a controlling interest in the stock of the Seaboard Air Line has beeu re? cently made, and it is believed that the proposition is made in behalf of the Southern Railway company, which is known to be anxious to secure control of theSerboard, which is the only drawback to its ambi? tion to make itself master of the southeastern railroad situation Is was also said that in the event a deal is not consummated, the Sea? board Air Line, which is now bottled up at Atlanta, will build a line to New Orleans. The name of the Seaboard does not appear in connection with the pro? posed line, but it is said that it will be operated as a part of the Seaboard ! system or in close connection with it. The new line would be 169 miles shorter than auy road uow operated between those points. Upset Weyler. KEY WEST, Fla, Oct. 2.-Tbe steamer Mascott arrived from Ha? bana between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning. Passengers report rumors in Ha? bana that Maceo in his attack ou the trocha last Friday used dynamite guns with terrible effect. The Spau i8h loss is placed at 1,000. That part of the trocha attacked was com? pletely demolished. Many small skirmishes are reported. Maceo's victory has completely upset VVeyler. Nuthiug more is heard of him taking the field lu person. The new troops are complaining bitterly of tue food furnished them. Some of the Western banks are get? ting into trouble by taking too much stock in politics and giving too much attention to boosting the gold side of the questson. One in Pawnee, 111., bad to olose its doors a few days ago because the silver men, who dido't fancy the active part it was taking io politics, withdrew their deposits. McKinley stands for gold monometal? lism; Bryan stands for the coinage of both gold and silver at the ratio of 16 to 1, and tbe people are sitting as the jury. When a lawyer has neun jr law nor evidence on bis side, he tries bully? ragging and blackguarding the oppos ing counsel. The advocates of the gold standard are now trying this pro? gram on Bryan, but he graws stronger with the people all the time, and their verdict will be the most convincing an? swer to ali the mean things that are being said.-Augusta Chronicle. Governor Evaus has been saying some exceedingly foolish things since his defeat. Everybody realizes that his failure to get the nomination can be attributed to the charges that were made against him during the campaigu. Now the proper thing for him to do if he wants to became a factor in South Carolina politics and gain the confidence of the people is to go to work aud prove his inno? cence. Unless this is done he is a "dead letter" for all the time to cime.-Barnwell Sentinel. Two Live? Saved. Mrs. Phoebe Thomas, of Junction City, 111 j was told by her dy.tors she had Consumption and that there was no hope for her, but two bottles Dr. King's New Discovery completely cured ber and shs says it .saved ker life. Mr. Thos. Eggers, 139 Florida St. San Francisco suffered from a dreadful cold, approaching Cons?mption, tried ?without result everything else then bought one bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery and ia two weeks was cured. He is naturally thankful, lt ia such results ol which these ape .?amples, tbat pr?ve the wonderful efficacy of this medicine in Coughs and Colds. Free trial Bottles at J. F. W DeLorme's Drug Store.
