WBBK??SBAY. MAY 27, 1396. A QUESTION OF ENGINEERING. The French Statesman De Freycinet ami His Argument With a Criminal. A story is told of the French minis? ter, At. de Freycinet. In the midst of the trial of a man for high treason he became deeply interested in an argu? ment with the accused to the effect that his crime might have been committed much more easily and cheaply. AL de Freycinet is a man of fine character and ability. Before he be? came a politician he was a skillful en? gineer. When he was president of the judicial council a man who was accused of helping to pull down the column Vendome in 1671 was brought before him. The man confessed his guilt, but j pleaded that he was young and fanatical i at the time, and that he had been j drawn into helping to pull down the j column by his pride as an engineer in i arranging scaifolds and ropes to accom- ? plish the feat. *'You are a criminal, " said the min- i i ister severely. "You insulted the his tory and the glory of the country in de? stroying that column. But, " Le reflect? ed a moment, "how did you do it? As j a question of engineering I would like to know" "Oh, it was very simple. " replied | the accused, and he sat down at the ta- ! ble, drew out a plan and calculated j lines, curves aud angies, while the min- j ister bent over him, following the work with interest. As it weut on, however, De Freycinet j shook his head, shrugged his shoulders ? snd smiled, and when it; was finished ! took paper and pencil and said: "That isn't bad, but you might have ! done it much more casi Iv and economic- I ally." j Then in his turn covering the paper i with curves, angles and calculations he proved that twice as much time and i money as were necessary had been es- ! pended. "However," he concluded severely, j "you were guilty of high treason i against the nation and must pay the ' penalty." The engineer did not escape with a i light sentence, but he had much satis- j faction in replying: "Ah, monsieur, but did you not just j now say that it had cost me too much ; already?' '-Savannah News. - A Corral cf Balls. In the Irish house of commons cf 1795 during a debate on the leather tax the chancellor cf the exchequer, Sir John Parnell, observed that "in the prosecu? tion of the peasant war every one ought to be ready to give his last guinea to save the remainder cf his fortune. " Mr. Vandeleur replied that ' 'a tax on leather j would press very heavily on the bare- j footed peasantry of Ireland. " The Post j in 1812 made the following statement : | "We congratulate ourselves most on having tom oft" Gobbett's mask and re? vealed his cloven foot. It was high time that the hydra head of faction should be soundly rapped over the knuckles. " The present Duke cf Leeds is reported j to have accused the late government of j making a direct attack on thc brewers ; by means of a sidewind. Only thc other j day I noticed, in The ?standard, I believe, j that Sir Francis Scott, reviewing the ; troops after the Ashanti expedition, said that they were no doubt disappoint- ? ed at having no fighting, but if there ? had been "there would have been many j absent faces here today. " It was during i the late administration that one cf the Irish whips telegraphed to Dublin that ? "the silence of the Irish members would ; be heard in the house of commons no longer." . j It was the celebrated Sergeant Arabin j who, at the central criminal court, in- j formed the prisoner before him that "if j there was a clearer case of a man rob? bing his master, that case was. this j case," and after passing sentence con? cluded, "I therefore give you the opp- r tunity of redeeming a character irre? trievably lost. "-Loud jn Spectator. Numbering Thread. The questions, "Why is spool cotton numbered as it is; and why are figures j not used in regular order?" are often ' asked. The explanation is this: Thc i numbers cn the spool express the num- i ber cf hanks which are required to ! wind a pound. Tho very finest spinning ; rarely exceeds oOO hanks to the pound, j while in the very coarsest there is about j a half pound in each hank. The more ? common qualities, however, these from | which sewing thread is usually made, j run from 10 to 50 hanks to the pound, j and the soo- ls on which it is wound are : - numbered 10 to 50 in accordance. Write as You Feel. If you would write to any purpose, j you must be perfectly free from within. ! Give yourself the natural rein ; think I on no pattern, no patron, no paper, no j preiss, no public ; think on nothing, but j follow your impulses, Give yourself as j you are-what you arc and how you see j it. Everyman sees with his own eyes cr does not see at all.-Emerson. Seltzer water derives its name from ; the village of Lower Selters, in Nassau, I where several springs, united in one j basin, yield 5, OOO cubic feet an hour of j this sparkling mineral water. Disorder in a drawing room is vulgar : in an antiquary's study, not. The black j battle stain on a soldier's face is not j vulgar, but the dirty face of a house maid is.-Ruskin. i Chinese Treatment of Children.
