Miku Bioon, Bsvaweir, S C. : Dear Sir : Complying with your re? quest of even date I herewith furnish you with a statement of the seizure of : a gallon of alcohol and one pound of gum camphor by Constable Gribben, at Blackville, some few weeks ago. My mother was io a dying condition, and her doctor ordered that she be freely bathed in alcohol, strongly im? pregnated with camphor. There was no alcohol to be had io Barnwell, and my father ordered it, along with some groceries, from his groeer in Charleston, bot instructed the grocer to ship tbe aleobol and camphor by express, thinking that we would reeeive it sooner than if it were shipped with groceries by freigh t The pack age was seized' "at Black ville by Mr. Gribben. I being unknown to him, sad desrriog te 'got the grafts as soon ss possib?, got Mr. Hemmet, th? railroad agent here, to wire him and state that the articles were for medicinal use, and were urgently needed. Mr. Hammett j is well known to bim and I desired to have the truthfulness and good faith of my request for the release of the I stuff vouched for by some one Mr. Gribben could rely upon, as he did not ? know me. ! Mr. Hammett explained the case, but he still refused delivery, olaiming it was "rom" and has since posted notice i of its seizure as rora, but makes no mention of the camphor. I rocogoize the faot that it was strictly speaking a legal seizure, and have no complaint to make on that score ; I do bold, though, that any constable who has sufficient judgment to entitle bim to an appointment, should exercise bis judg? ment in a case of this kind, and release goods under circumstances which were vouched for as in this case, and I fur? ther believe that his superior officer would have held bim harmless for so ! using his judgment. ? do oot write this in hopes of get tink back tbe seized goods. Commis? sioner Traxler has already declined de? livery on the grouod that the shipper i marked package "Groceries." aod thereby attempted ?ti evasion of the law. I would bare seen to it that yon bad no cause for eeo s o re. by removing Mr Gribben to another field, and thus the lamentable tragedy which bas darkened jour own household, and left a widow with four children to atraggl? alone with the world; might have been averted. As a usual thing constables are al sent from borne, and bad I known kt ?on i Mr. Gribben would hare been detailed forduty- outside of Barn well cou aty.
