WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18. The Sumter Watchman was fouuded | in 1850 and the True Southroii in l$b'6. I The Watchman and Southron now has tbe combined circulation and influence j of both of the old papers, and is mani festly the best advertising medium in j Sam ter. ANYTHING TO BEAT EARLE. We have been informed by a reliable | gentleman that the leaders of Tillman- j ism and the desperate opponents of Col. J Karle in this county have agreed upon a j basis for combination and log rolling, and that is to elect seven Tillman and three Bratton delegates to the General Convention from Sumter. . ?.\Ve cannot believe that the friends of j Gen Brattou, however much they may j hate Earle, would lend themselves to j any such scheme. There is nothing io j common between that noble old gentle- j man, Gen'l Bratton and Ben. Tillman. His counsel would be against any com- j promise of principles to serve the ends of personal malice aod hatred. The contest is this County from the ! nature of things, must necessarily be I between Earle and Tillman an<* any votes for Gen'l Bratton iu Sumter | County would be either thrown away or goto strer^then Tillman. The desperate game of "anything to j beat Earle" ought not to lead men into ! any scheme or collusion requiring a ; sacrifice of principles. Democrats must I be either for or against Ttlhnan, There can be no half way ground. _? mihi ii i mm m I . THE STATE CAMPAIGN. Up to this writing campaign meetings | have been held at G reenvil'.e, Spartau- , burg. Laurens and New berry. At , each of these places Tillman, Earle and j Bratton huve been present and have j spoken, as candidates for Governor, j Y J. Pope aod Eugene B. Gary, as candidates for Attorney General on the ! Tillman ticket, Adj't Gen'l Bonham, | on his own motion and Hugh S. Farley | as a Tillmanite, have spoken and pre sented themselves as candidates for that office. Col Quitman Marshall, Secre- j tary of State, also spoke at Greenville, | and then went to EJgefieid aod got . married, a far more agreeable occu- j pation. It is useless to attempt to disguise j the fact that each of these meetings was overwhelmingly, aggressively, aod j aggravatingly Tillmanite. The other ; side or sides hardly got a showing, and for any apparent effect produced, the candidates may as well have been em pioyed in the hopeless task of whistling j down the wind. At most of the places, \ in the evening, after the hosts of Till- | man had betaken themselves homeward, ! complimentary serenades were given to ! Earle and Bratton by the friends of those gentlemen, showing that there \ were a few men ir eh place who have Dot bowed the * to Ben nor kissed | his image. Benny told a singularly foul story at j Greenville, it appears, which caused all tbe ladies present and some modest | men to blush .for. shame. One of our j gifted^ conVeniporaries thereupon rises ! to advise^ladie? henceforward to abstain i from attending these meetings, lest Ben ! forgef(?) himself again and discharge i his lip to their discomfiture. We also | advise the ladies to keep away, for Ben not only tells his howling followers to : hush up their mouthy a hard thing, it ; is said, for ladies to do, but he even j designates his adherents as a parcel : of .jackasses, as at Ridgeway, a term wholly unwarranted when ladies are j present. But Ben is solid with the voters, it seems, whatever uncompli : mentary epithets he may apply to them, j however hopelessly vulgar his campaign stories may be. These meetings, we have observed, are generally opeued with prater. We j feel deeply that prayers ought to be made for those who are or who are to be iu authority, but we also cannot sup press the feeling or the expression of it that prater <>n the occasion of red hot political meetings is cut of place, it j there is any recognition of a higher be- j ing than Tillman at any of them, it there is any religion except a certain blind and unreasoning devotion t<; shi> ; new political Moses, we have not ob- j served it. We cannot think that pray er, in sueii circumstances, ran av,:il much Tr is an abu-e. of : he real mean ing aud office of prayer, and bhouid be left out of the program. ! We observe that Col J J Dargan went to Anderson on M today IJ< goes for two reason.-; fiift, to deliver; the address before the literary societies j of tiie Pat lick .Military School, and secoud. to speak, if permitted, at the campaign meeting to-day. We avilir with interest the account.-, from that meeting, which cannot fail to be etormy indeed. Among others specifically charged by Ti'dman with perjury in violating their oa?h t?.- support the Constitution, is Judge James F. Iziar, <;f Oraoge burg, recently elected to succeed di late Judge Aldrtch. This will be a matter of surprise to tbe people of r! < State, aod it. will require a t-n at deal more than Ben'? unsupported assertion, to make them b^iieve :t. It is on a par with many of!.er reckless charge* made by this urt.-rly tn^crupuious ;? >:>, who either not understand the force and meaning of the language .':< employs, or eUe js too extreme, unsafe aud violent a partisan i<o~ any respect abi^ set of men to follow. Since setting up r!i?; above-, reports , of the Abbeville meeting have reach <i ' lift They show that the tide has at. hst been turned, and, strange to say, iu j that county where Tillman wh- thought i to be without serious opposition. tien Kar?e'? speech was ',o;g'*C!->:ve aod tuilitiii. ('apt. Weber closes his report of the meeting with the following summing up: The tide has turned. Abbeville has risen up and more than chocked Ti?man's wheel. What was conceeued to be a Tillman county has given the best Anti-TiUinan demonstration of the campaign. The cheers to-day were not by any means all on one side. Anti Tillman men are enthusiastic, and say that they are now ready f-?r work. To-day's meeting will serve to revive the courage of those who have lest heart. It was. all things considered, a great triumph for the Anti-Ttilinan wing. The Richland Democracy, in mass meeting assembled in Columbia hist night reso!* d it self into a campaign club, and adopted ringing resolutions against the vile language and untruthful slanders on which the campaign for Tillman is being run, and calling upon the people to attend all public meetings and labor io save the State from Tilimanism. Judge A. C- Ffaskell and Gen Johnson H.tgcod made speeches, the hater defending Col. Butler and the Agricultural Department. We will print the resolutions and have some thing to say about them next week. Col Eatle Endorsed by Ci?jzens of Stattburg Township. Stateb?rg, S. C. June 12, 1800. Life Insurance Company of Philadelphia. ASSETS, $15174078. January M. 181 SURPLUS, $2,626190 THE OOilNO INVESTMENT. The matter of in vestment in life insurance is now attracting the South, as it lias already absorbed the .Northern savings. The matter for providing for one's family an immediate estate and accumulating a fund which will be available to one's self in cash when the working years of one's life have passed, is now recognized as a public blessing to ail, and has proven a more profitable investment than government or State bonds or savings banks, especially as the leading insurance policy embodies all the elements of a savings institution. Policies issued by the Perm Mutual Life Insurance Company, of Philadelphia, have printed upon the second page a table showing the cash values of the policies every year, so that the policy is always available It was the first company ii; the world which went before the Legislature and petitioned for the non-forfeiture law of policies, which law has saved so many mil lion dollars to helpless widows and orphans. It issues every plan of insurance, from the term "insurance," that costs a man oO years old $12 per $1,000 tip to the 6 per cent, guaranteed and annuity bonds. Terms and results of policies of any de scrip! ion may be had on application. FEATURES OF PENN MUTUAL They are Incontestable. After two years from issue of policy there are no conditions, limitations or res trictions. The insured tuny travel or re.-ide where he likes ; he may engage in any avocation, no matter how hazardous : he may die from any cause or under any circumstances ; the only requirement is the payment of premium as stipu lated in the policy. They are Non-Forfeit able. Every dollar paid the Company secures the member full value, io ao equi table form, after three payments Tit) most cases after two). The Company's plans for ' Extension" and "Paid-up" provide against loss to members who discontinue their policies. Cash Surrender. Manv forms of policies permit a member to withdraw at any period of five yea s, others a: the end of longer periods, as selected, r-iking with him iu casii, the full reserve-value uf his policy-, inclusive of all surplus accumulation. Cash Loans. Certain policies contain the agreement to lend the member upon their security sixty-sis per ceut. (being not less than SlOO ) of the reserve value; thus guarding against their ianse. and enhancing their value as Marketable Collateral. There is nothing which is safe and desirable in life insurance, no new and commendable feature, that h omitted from the revised forms and plans of this well-tried and enduring institution. Are you insured by an incontestable, non-forfet table p.uicy. with liberal feat ures such as the Pent) Mutual issues? Is your esh.te secured, is your family safe were you to die ?
