'i\ ht ?frill *> fffcrvw itt}? ^fi?'thrrt?? WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER IS. Tbe Farmers ia Politics. From accounts we get, the organized farmers of the J?tate are already gettiug into deep water io ?State politic* and redeveloping among themselves a fight. OD the some liues upon which the Dem? ocrats of the State have all aloog been divided. General Johusoo llagood is, we are told, being put foward by the conservative element while 15. ll Till? man is being backed by the more ag? gressive-and perhaps it is proper to say. progressive-eic.neut. The voters in the Alliance are divided exactly as the voters outside the Alliance ar?\ and it is right and proper that they should be. N> organizion eau or should bind the consciences and control the votes of free men or Limit freedom of j thought. Tu? inevitable result of these condi- ! tiona, unless they are changed, will be '.? fictions within the Alliance, tu be fol- j ?owed by iotrigU'S. disputes and dis- j satisfaction and the turning of the order from its wise and great purposes to be a politic il machine rua by politicians in 1 their own interest. The Alliance has certain well de?ned j principie, if is for the protection and : advancement of 'he fanners. Members can very properly and safely as individ? uals or by agreement among themselves support only such men as have proved themselves to be in sympathy with Al? liance purposes and principles and wno can be depended rm to espies* their sympathy by practical action when it is needed ; but the use or attempted use of such an organization to promote the ambition of individu?is means danger. As an independent organizion bound to nobody, the Alliance is a for? midable force which can command res? pect from men of ali shades of opinion. Once hitched to the tails of some man's coat it must become a mere faction, inviting the same opposition and enmity from which other factions suffer. It must be remembered that there are two political organizations in this ; S ate -Democratic and Republican. [ . The'Utter ls invisible, but it is here, ready to be warmed into life and dan? gerous activity in a day whenever en? couragement and hope are offered it. The Farmers' Alliance, composed vir? tually entirely of white Democrats and ? doing its poi.tical work in Democratic primaries and conventions, constitutes a j Democratic organization within the Democratic organization, and if bound to the support of certain men will shut out all others and destroy the discipline and streng h cf the rarty. The wheel . within a wheel system is always dan gercus. F.-llowed to its last analysis it must mean bossism, if the Alliance controls trie Democratic party, and a ' faction of the Alliance controls the Al? liance and few men control tho controll? ing faction it means power in a verv few hand?, which is precisely wh it we ; have been workinf to get away from. So far as we know, the controlling j . power of the Alliance is on the line the , Greenville News has always held in State p??li:ics and if" we wish to have ' our views prevail bv the shortest possi- j j ble method wa would ?abor ear nos ly to stimulate the Alliance to political ac- , tivitv. But in doing that we would go against what v.e believe to be the best ; interest of the State, the party and the ' order Ij^t Alliance men refuse to be led as ? a body into any political movement for the prcmoti'-n of any uiau's interests \ Let (hem bland squarely by the princi? ples of their order and vote for men re? presenting those principles, each mem? ber reserving the right to use his judg- j ment in selecting his men and refusing to be bound by the orders of judmeut ' of any bod v else. If the friends of (?<;vernor Bagood or Mr. Ullman or Mr Stackbouse or any? body else are trying to use the Alliance as 3 ladder for them to climb on, let ali , be sent to the rear Committed to and working on'v f<-r principles the Alliance wi!! b<- a p?rora? ient power in polities and will bc free, so id and undi>turbed to ?ive its atten? tion and streng!!) to the execution <>f i's purpose outside ?>f politics. Coin miffed to arid worked by an-i fr men, if will surely be divided and distracted, turned from irs most important objects and wrecked as the Grande was wrecked - (?re* UK tile A* H A I*PJ N I0."?S AND CON T KN T M !?
