H? l&T Pierce, son of Representative Fierce, of Logan county, Illinois, is suffering^from glanders; contracted in Northwest Missiouri in J one last. - A special train with Robinson's cir t&s aboard was wrecked at St. Louis last week. Two men were killed and ? lion, a tiger and several other ani? mals escaped. The Brooklyn Prohibitionists had a grand rally on last week: The speak? er? denounced the Republicans as trai fisrs/to th? canse and - worse than the Democrats who are open enemies. A Waco, Texas, special says Joseph E. Hamilton, a printer, cf that city has fallen heir to an estate the value of which is over $2,000,000. The latest explosive ?3 'Eaimesite,' .fomented! by Dr. Emmens, of London. ? It is made from a distillation of coal" and a compound of mineral salts, each non-explosive and .non-inflammable alone. It will not explode by friction, but will by concussion, and its demon? strated power is enormous. Here is the way the "bid. James E. Hamilton, mail carrier be? tween Mi?maand'Lake Worth, florida, : -on. the South Atlantic coast, met with a terrible death Tuesday last. His route necessitates crossing Hillsboro inlet, "which he does in a row "boat. While crossing he was attacked by a num? ber of sharks, and although he iongLt them with, oars as long as possi? ble, they finally capsized his boat and literally devoured him alive. A fisher? man witnessed the horrible death, but _ was unable to render assistance. Mrs. Mary C. Cooper, wife of Mr. John A. Cooper, of Sutton's oeighbor *4ood, was bitten by a spider about two -weeks ago, the effects of which, it is feared, will prove fatal. She was in her garden at the time, and was bitten on her chin. . The effect was instan? taneous and was so severe that it inca t pacitated her from walking to the house. Since that time she has been having ppasms continually and suffers great pain. The bite caused little or no swelling.- Williamsburg Record. Says the Lancaster Ledger of last j Wednesday: A daughter of Mr. J. T. Shaw; who lives near belair, in this j county, disappeared from her fathers house on Sunday night last, a week ago. j Her relatives have made diligent ioqui- j ry and search for ber'in the neighbor? hood, but nothing can be learned of her whereabouts. The young lady was about 17 years of age and there was no j reason for her leaving the paternal roof j where everything was pleasant to her. Hr. Spurgeon the great Baptist j preacher of London, has withdrawn ! from the Baptist Union. In aa no une- j lng his determination to withdraw and i replying to his critics ne says : 'To. j pursue union at the expense of truth, j ja treason to Jesus. JU o tamper with | His doctrine, is to become traitors to ! Him. We have before us the wretched i spectacle of professedly orthodox Chris-1 tians publicly avowing union with those j who deny the faith, and cai! the fail of j a man a fabl? and deny the personality j of the Holy Ghost/ j The Panama Canal enterprise was ! never a legitimate business thing in '.? ? itself. It was theougrowth of that for- j eign ' sentiment which sw.ore against i American control of any ship railway i or canal across the isthmus. The Nica- . rangua Canal is the proper project. ! Outside estimates place the cost of \ completion of the Nicaraguan at ?05,- i 000,000. Twice that sum has ai- j ready been expended on the Panania j Canal and it is not one third finished j yet, and it is very doubtful if it will . be opened for business on thc day select- ; ed by Couru DoLesscps, if it ever is so ! opened at all. The sweet singer of Sweden, Jenny i Lind, is dead. ?be was a good woman; j as modest and as charitable as she was ? melodious, and her voice was thc finest j perhaps, that ever warbled frusj haman j lips. Thirty five years ago she retired j ffom the stage, but from thar, day to ' this the 'Swedish Nightingale' has bec? ! the unapproachable synonym for vocal ; excellence. No star has ever risen | throughout that long period which even [ approximates her prominence. Airer amazing and delighting two continents for a few years, she retired from public view and spent the rest cf her life in the charmed circle of horne. Here sir made.an earthly paradise of love, dury and beneficence, and at the close of ? life meritorious in every way, has now j gone to the celestial choir. There ii? one sensible paper in Gliio, ; the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. Demo- j eratic. It says : 4if General Gordon; had thrown his principles asi^e as did Longstreet and Mosby and joined thc Republican party simply for political preferment, his star would have been in the ascendant, his loyalty and ; patriotism would have been unquestion- i ed and his name wonld have boen en- : rolled among the chosen. General i Gordon's principles and the interest of j tis people were of more importance to j bim than all the honors that might have ! been heaped upon him by a degenerate ?MttyGeneral Gordon is a perfect type of a Southern statesman and I en flt lin. He pleads for one flag and LB aadinded Union.' i j What is this Qisesss that is Coming Upon Os? Like a thief at night it steals in upon us unawares. The pa? tients have pains about the chest and sides, and sometimes in the back. They feel dull and sleepy; the mouth has a bad taste, especially in the morning. A sort of sticky slime collects about the teeth. The appetite is poor. There is a feeling like a heavy load on the stomach; sometimes a faint, all gone sensation at the pit of the stomach which food does not satisfy. The eyes are sunken, the hands and feet become cold and clammy. After a while a cough sets in, at first dry, but " after a few months it is attend? ed with a greenish-colored ex pectoration. The .patient feels tired all the while, and sleep does not seem to afford any rest. After a time he becomes nervous, irritable and gloomy, and has evil forebodings. There is a giddiness, a sort -of whirl? ing sensation in the head when rising up suddenly. The bow? els become costive; the skin is dry and hot at times ; the blood becomes thick and stagnant; the whites of the eyes become tinged with yellow; the urine is- scanty and high colored, de? positing a sediment after stand? ino;. There is..frequently a ; spitting up of the food, some? times with a sour taste and sometimes with a sweetish taste; this is frequently at? tended with palpitation of the .heart; the vision becomes im? paired, with spots before the eyes; there is a feeling of great prostration and weakness. All ; of these symptoms are in turn pr?sent.-' cIt is>- thought that nearly one-third of our popu? lation has this disease income bf its varied forms. It has been' founcTthat" phy? sicians have mistaken the cause of this disease. Some have treated it* for a liver complaint, others for kidney disease, etc./ etc., but none of these kinds of treatment -have been attended with success; for it is really constipation and dyspepsia. It is also found that Shaker Ex? tract of Hoots, or Mother Sei gel's Curative Syrup, when properly prepared will remove this disease in all its stages. Care must be taken, however, to secure the genuine article. IT WILL SELL BETTER THA2T COTTOX. Mr. John C. Eemptinstall, of Chula?nnee, Cleburn Co., Ala,, writes: "Mv wife has been so much benefited -by Shaker Extract of Hoots or Seigei's Syrup that she says she would rather be without part of her food than without the medicine. It has done her more good than the doctors and all other medicines put toother. I would ride twenty miles to get it into the hands of any suf? ferer if he can get it in no other way. I believe it will soon sell in this State better than cotton. TESTIMONY FROM TEXAS. Mrs. S.E. Barton, of Varner, Eipley Co., Mo., writes that she had been long ailiicted with . dyspepsia and disease of the urinary organs and was cured by Shaker Extract of Roots. Rev. J. J. McGuire, merchant, of the same place, who sold Mrs. Barton the medicine, says he has sold it for four years and never knew it to fail. j SHE WAS ALMOST DEAD .'I was so low with dyspep- ? sia that there was not a phy? sician to be found who could do anything with nie. 1 had buttering <?: the h-uri and swimming of the JUead.
