The next_ item in the imperial pro gramme was the usuai prolonged lasting in the 'Temple of Fasting/ which, terminated , the preliminary ceremonies. The Emperor has since been preparing himself for the more important function by days aud nights of prayer and supposed communion witfc the"* shades of his gF?rifi?d an cestors. But again your correspon dent is at a lose, and in common with every one else in China confesses his inability to state what took place at any one of these supernatural in terviews. Oa Monday, however, all the imperial clan, numberiog many Jiendreds and termed the Tseng Shih, ? and the; hJgh ; Ministers^ including '" ^Hung" Chan and the Marqais Te*eng, were assembled by. edict in the palace to witness the ceremony of -the formal im*tdlation oftheEmpercr. i 3 THE :OEBE3iOXY. 3 No. European eye. has ever wit nessed the proceedings upan such au occasion, and it is doubtful whether any has ever seen the inside : of the palace at all. But the cere mony is briefly this :?A crash of cymbals and the assemblage falls down, face to the ground, prostrate before the Empress mother, Hwang How she is-ca?ed^--angeiic, Mother of the State. The Emperor then enters the hall, surrounded by his retinue and dressed in flowing robes of yellow and gold. lie bows to ' the ground, or to kowtows, as it is termed, three times, iu homage to the maternal dignity. The rest of the as semblage follow his, example and re main rising and falling like a Moham medan at prayer, for several minutes. At the appropriate moment the Em press vacates her seat, which she has ' filled for the last time, unless the Em peror dies, when she, ir? respect of her right as Empress Dowager, again re sumes her place. The emperor then takes ,her place, and the courtiers \ avert their eyes from his augnst coun tenance and continue the kowtowing once more. precedence. A long scroll is then laid before the , Emperor, on which he makes a strag ,_ gfing looking mark with the red pen cil, and the ceremony concludes, the clansmen and ministers retiring in or der of precedence, to which great at -' te ut ion is paid, as a mistake in this * "matter isa very grave and unfortunate affair indeed. The mark which His Majesty makes with the red pencil is ? thing which the greatest men in the State covet, and a document signed by Ms sacred hand would command al .. most any price by his subjects. All the native papers in the capital and throaghout the Empire appeared this ^A&jr'ot^tbe crimson, paper. Our two " lialive japexa raJSbanghai, the a V-1? * ?. and the Shepcuo,- were nearly all bought op by Celestials and Europeans as mementoes of the day." Strange to .say there was very little "evidence of popular rejoicing on the - occasion. The Chinese eh-ips-of-war in the har bor display;,al Hule, extra buntmg, floated a larger and ;?iuidier dragon flag than usual and fired a Tew shots, but here the display ended. ; The average John Chinaman cares but lit tle for and takes no interest in the doings of his ruler.. He regards the present Emperor as a usurper, and would not lose a day's 'fudgin' to cel?brate his installation. The offi cial classes, however, including the dignitaries known as the Chebsieu and the Taotsai, followed by many mandarins, repaired to the city tem ple in Shanghai^ which represents the imperial palace at Pekjru and did reverence before the tablet of the Emperor, who is the Buddha of the present day. r y. -- oj^r.fcEcr'?TioNs. The. adoption of Western ideas -is marching with telling strides, and Pek?n is at this moment agitated with many schemes for the laying of great railways, and~the "serict?o?ing of in ternal steamboat communication? , Promoters from the New and the Old World are busy on the capital, and have gained the ear of the* foremost men. Any. day we expect ,toJ bear that the imperial approval has been obtained to more than one proposal of vast importance, not alone to Cnina but to the world/and more particular lythe great industrial world. ; Two or three of the leading ministers are strongly in favor of progress acc?rdi ing to VVestern notions and their in fluence at headquarters may at any time now be felt. Wade Hampton's Belief in Prayer.. The love and admiration in which he is held by the people of South Carolina are illustrated in an incident related by General Hampton when he was re covering from his sickness. *I am certain/ he said, 'that my life was saved by the ferrent prayers of the people in South Caroline. I wee at the point of -death and had lost ail. interest m life, when I received a letter from an old Methodist minister, ? friend, telling me of the deep and devout petitions pat up for my restoration to health by the MethodistConference then in session at Newberry. The letter closed by beg ging me to exercise my will to live in response to the supplications of the people of the whole State, who ^were prayiog for me night a od day in every household. When I heard the letter read I promised my sister ihat I would heed the kind, loving words of the man of God, and arouse my will to live. That night I fell into a deep sleep and dreamed most vividly that I was io a spacious room in which I was moved to all parts of the State, so that I met my assembled friends everywhere. I remembered most distinctly of all, old Beaufort, where I had last been. I saw immense assemblages, and as I looked down upon them a grave person age, approached me and touched me on the Shoulder and said to me : 'These people are praying for you. Live! Live!! Live !!!' I never Tealived anything like it before. It seemed a vision. I woke the next morning feel ing the life-blood creeping throagh my veins, and I told my family that the crisis was passed and that I should get better.'?Z, L. White in The American Magazine. Your clab swaggerers, who are sucking the buts of billiard cues ail night, call female society in sipid. Poetry is as uninspiring to a yokel, beauty has no charms for a blind man, music doss not please a poor beast, who does not know one tone from another ; but as a trae epicure is hardly ever tired of water, sauce and brown bread and butter, ? protest I can sit for a whole night talking to a well-regulated, kindly woman about her daughter Fanny or ber boy Frank, and like the evening's entertainment. One of the greatest benefits a man can derive from a woman's society is that he is bound to be respectful to her. The habit is of great good to your morals, men. de pend apon it. Oar education makes us the most eminently selfish men io tho world, and the greatest benefits that we bave is to think of somebody to whom we are bound to be constantly attentive and respectful. mm > > mm The drunken feast has gone on long enough.
