Sunday School. ?The local editor of the Greenville . Mojpttq.iv.eeT, writing up the Baptist Sanday School, says: h ~ - Five hundred and ninety-five names are on the roll of the Sunday School, of ^ r wjieh thirty-five are officers and teach - erst and five hundred and sixty are scholars. Mr. B.S. Morgan is the Superin tendent, G. G.-Wells, Esq., is the As sistant, and Mr. J B. Sherman is Su perintendent of the Primary Depart ment* with Mr. J. C. Smith as assist ant. Dr. W. J. Dargan teaches the senior male Bible Class, and Prof C. H Jud son the senior female Bible Class There are over one hundred and fifty scholars in these two Bible classes. The teachers lecture the classe? every Sun day, the lessons being explained and expounded in the most practical and interesting manner. - Prof. H. T. Cook has an interesting class, using only the Greek Text. The Infant Class, in the charge of Miss Kobbie McKay, is also a marvel- J Think of from fifty to seventy-five inter-1 esting little children io a separate room j being taught the blessed troths of our j Savior by a troe Christian lady, and a picture of this class is presented. There were present last Sunday, of this par ticular class, fifty-four?ninety-two in I all being on the roll. Mr. ?obert McKay has been Secre- j tary of the School ever since 18G1? holding that position under the Super ihtendency of the late Mr. Charles J. Elford, Mr. Erington E'ford, deceased, Mr.J. C. Smith, who resigned, aud ais^onder the present Superintendent, Mr. It-S. Morgan. Mr. (Isifn^sa live Superintendent, and bas goou ^assistants, as anyone can judge from the progress they are making Mr. W. W. Keys, chairman of the Finance Committee, read the annual financial report on Sunday last, for the year closing September 30th. ?le ' stated that the total receipts of the Sunday School for the year were $464.55. Of this sum ?3 i5 was taken in by contributions from the classes, and ?106 from the lectures ofSauah brah. The average collection from the classes for each Sunday was ?6 55. The Sunday School has paid to Turm an University, ?49; for State Missions, $53 ; for Foreign Missions, $40 : Home Missions, $103. This makes a grand ?>??fof $255 paid out for church work, besides the moneys used for the Sunday School support. . Stopped It.?'Is your pa at home little girl Y . .*Yes. sir ; do you wish to see him V j -Yes.* - 'Bat you won't know him if you do ' see him !* Why. what's the matter. * Welt, you see, out in the country,! on our farm, a man and his wife got to j fighting,.and pa tried to stop them." \ Oh. indeed ? -Yes; you'd better call again. Yoa .' pa now/ j ggg Playing Drunk. . A physician was in the habit of in dulging in intoxicating beverages, ajid the practice had grown upon him to an extent of which he had little idea. One day he was lying on the sofa in the parlor, apparently asleep* when he overheard his two little boys about their play, talking together. Said one: ' Let us play drunk, and stagger about as pa does when he comes home." It was no sooner said than done. And as he lay with half-closed eyes and watched his son reeling, and hic coughing, and mimicking his own drunken antics with an accuracy which indicated that he .had enjoyed and improved ample opportunities for careful observation, a pang shot through his heart, and he determined by the help of God, that his children should never again see him in such a condition as that. IIow few are there who indulge in strongfdrihk who h?ve the slightest idea of the condition into which they bring themselves by their excesses, and of the shame and disgrace which justly belongs to those who deliber ately go into paths of temptation and vice. Surely, if they could see their own dishouor they would refuse to make themselves a laughing-stock to the thoughtless and the foolish. Would that the eyes of some might -be opened, ere it is too late, and that they might turn from the deadly cup while life and hope remaiu.?TJie Safeguard. Kead and Ponder. Our watering places, and other re sorts of health and recreation during the Summer months, are fast becoming whirlpools of dissipation. Church members are drawn in, and hopelessly 'wrecked and ruined, in the course of one or two seasons. They go away from the restraints, that are~~thrown around them at home?away from their Sunday-schools and prayer-meetings and communions, and are thrown with the giddy, gay, thoughtless, fashiona ble world,- and are carried away by the influence of worldly associates. They come home to neglect religious duty ; to defend worldly amusements; to find fault with faithful pastors; to exert a bad influence upon the younger mem bers, of tie church, and sometimes to sow th? seeds of dissension and discord in the congregations. For much of this, indulgent mothers are to blame All over the land there is the cotnoiaint of pastors and faithful laymen that fash ionable dissipations, particularly in the way of indulgence in the German waltz, *at balls, parties and masquerades, is creeping into the chureh, and bringing a blight and a curse with it. It must be stopped, or woe betide the Metho dist church. C. Advo cate. Be Thorough. The Hon. Josiah Qaincy was at one tiaic conversing with Daniel Webster upon the importance of doing even the smallest thing thoroughly and well, when the great man related an iueident concerning a petty insurance case which was brought to him while a young law yer in Portsmouth. The fee promised was only ?20. Yet, to do his clients full justice, Webster found he must journey to Boston and consult the law library. This involved an expense of above the amount of his fee, but after hesitating a little, he decided to go to Boston aud eonso?c the authorities, let the cost he what it might. He gained the case Years after this Webster was passing through the city of New York. An important insurance case was to be tried that day, and one of the counsel had been suddenly prostrated by illuess. Money was no object, and WVbster was asked to name his terms and couduet ! th? case. "It is preposterous,*'said he, "to ex- j pect me to prepare a legal argument at j a few hours' notice.'' But when they insisted that he should ! look at the papers, he con.seuted. It was his old tweury-doUar ense over ' again, and having a remarkable ment- j ory he had all the authorities in his ! mind and won the suit. The court j knew he had no time for preparation, j and was astonished at the skill with ! which he handled the case. "So you I see,'' said Webster, as he concluded, j "I was handsomely paid, both in fame and money, for that journey to Boston," and the moral is that good work is re warded in the end. A Two-Dollar Marriage and a Carpet. *Wc want io be married on the dome of the capitol,' said Nuoley Clark, a War ren county youth, entering justice Eg glestone's ofiice in Des Moines, with Miss Jettie Collins, a pretty maiden of Warren couutv, leaning on his arm. 'It's too hot to go up there this after noon,' said the justice, mopping his brow with a red bandana. 'But I'd be Tvilling to pay extra?I don't want you to do it for nothing,' pleaded the bridegroom expectant. 'Well I wouldn't cliojb those stairs this sweltering afternoon for less than $10,' said the perspiring justice. 'If you have a mind to pay that much, all right; but I'd advise you to take a $2 ceremony right here in the office It will tie you just as tight as the ?10 wedding in the dome. 'What do you say Jettie?' inquired the matrimonially-inclined young man. 'Why, I say save the ?8 every time,' said sensible Jettie. 'b mil bay thir teen yards of real pretty carpet for the dining room, and 1 hute to wait another year for that carpet .' Will, go ahead, Mr Squire, give us ?2 worth, and dont leave any loops in the knot, for I never want it loosed,' said NunJey, and in five minutes Mr. and Mrs. Clark were on their way to a carpet store.
