Now, I propose to go "aJ?ttle farther into this matter. For-several years past tho solemn Lenten season bas been abused and misused by many members of the Church ia this city in great prepara? tion for a so-called Easter e?tertain ment ostensibly'for the benefit of some very laudable object. To./my certain A knowledge^ some parfies who.the last year w*?r? drawn into this vortex were so convinced of the inconsistency of j these proceedings and so realized the dissipating inSueoee that they refused to engage in it again. ? know of par ? ties who felt constrained to abstain from the Holy Communion, at Easter becaose of the wasted Lent they had passed in rehearsals at the theatre and quiet dances after them. Is that one tact not enough ' cause any pastor's! heart to ache, and to induce him. if be values the souls of his people and has any sense of his responsibility, to call a halt? On the Sunday before Ash Wcdnes- ' day th?? year I warned my people | against ?vartaking in this amusement ? thisy^nr. and if any of you di t. you went j ri?lit in the face of that office which is ordained to watch your souls and in j defiance of Rim who has saia : Ile that j bea ret h yu bcarcth Me. and be that! hearer h Me hearetb Him that sent Me." Now, my brethren, I ask you as Christian peeple and as churchmen anc women^ifthe ordinances of the Churcl h avenan y claim upon your attention ant obedience ? If so, what claim have y ot to be a Christian or a churchman ? I they have not, then what is the reasoi of Lent ? If all tts nak? ed ugliness was manifested very many who crowded te see anti enjoy it would have shrunk away wttirhorror. Satan beguiles, h? paints, he leads us on from step to step, be blunts our sensibilities till we are able to enjoy, or at least raise co voice against that which our Chris? tian conscience would once have scath? ingly condemned. The marvel to me was how when that ballet dance was in* troduccd upoa the stage, with those [dear little ones the unsuspecting pup? pets, that every Christian ?roman, at least, bad not risen and en masse have left the place which their presence coun? tenanced. It may make some angry to say so -r but if there is in the religion of i Jesas Christony vitality left among us, j T'know* in ? the heart of thousands the j feeling will rise, when temper is sub? dued; and say you are right ! Christian parents, what are you doing i with your children ? Do yon think the influence of those misspent sacred days and weeks-r-yss, even. Holy week-has passed away from .those young hearts ? Are we'not tolerating, without remon? strance, the introduction into our best circles of a style of dress at evening en 1 tertainments which cannot be called modest ? Are we not letting our young daughters go out from . balls aud parlies walking through the streets at late hoursralone-with youths? .Oh, are we not letting the bloom of innocence, pu? rity and modesty be rubbed off, for fear of b?ing thought prudish end old-time in our notions-a bloom.which once lost can Ucvcr be regained ? I am perfectly aware that I will not be agreed with in that which I am about to say. I remember very well when tn a private house in this city the modern round d-aoce-not one-tenth as objec? tionable as now-was first introduced, j It was a shock. It took some ti;?e to \ familiarize our society with it. But now every other dance is too tame and stupid. I have even heard it said young ladies would not a?teud a party 1 unless they were to have the rouud j dance. And I have seeu with my own j eyes such exhibitions on the ?loor that j my spirit has been fired with iudigua tion. I do not say that I believe dan I cing is a sin-a graceful dance, the po? etry of movement stirred by music, is beautiful and inuoceut ; but I defy any one to fiti J pot try or grace or elegance io the boisterous rush of the modern round dance, the heated flushed faces of men and women in this monstrous craze of modern society. Some may say you mi<-lit as well try to stem Niagara. If the Chrstian moth? ers of this city would say this shall bc abolished, round dancing would vanish quicker than it came. I believe as firmly as I live that tbe demoralization rf toe day, i^iich is an open secret freely dis?jj^S?d, has its origin in this perniciojjf? amusement. I was very glad t? find in -& recent conversation snjJatbat scholarly and eminent divine, 85r. Junkin, that he agrees with my views entirely. I do not know a Chris? tian minister or a Christian mao or woman who has made any attainment in thc Christian life who does not con? demn and abhor it. We have got to rise and assert ourselves. There is, however, eoougb left in truth to make itself felt. I acknowledge that I have been weak enough to permit the intro duction of this dance where I had con? trol, but I have done eo for the last time. Christian parents, every one of you, let the command go out from your firesides : This thing is done, your daughters shall not dance the round dance, and you have-cut out one o? the main roots producing theytvils you de? plore. You cannot trim and cut off this and that and leave the main demor? alizing influe nee at work. And you do not deprive your daughters of any r?atgobd?- The.generation which knew no round-dance bad as happy a time, yes, happier, because purer, than any who have indulged in it. Said a prom? inent physician to me io my study one week agOr-a man whorls not a commu? nicant of th?; Churchs f'l charge ; the pulpit? with dereliction qf nts duty. I speak aa a physician and I speak that which I lenow, that the round dance is a physical, moral and mental evil unmiti? gated;' that to it directly may be traced physical and moral evtis that has been irremediable. My words will fall unheeded on many ears, bat they will accomplish that whereunto they are sent. God knows it is for love to the . people, love tb the young, love for society, love for the Church, love to God, love-for the dear blessed Lord, who came down to the Virgin's womb and went up to Gethsem? ane and Calvary and the Tomb in thc Garden in our behalf, tbat I speak these plain things to you. I could narrate to you incident after incident, painful, dis? tressing, shockiog ; but I have no pur? pose to expose to public gaze our shame. | If the third of the things which have been commonly spoken about were printed we would all implore that the type be broken up. I think -that a great deal has been done thoughtlessly-unintentionally to do wrong; but the sober second thought, the j^-jstian reflection of the truly pious p^Pfe of our city will ere long justify me in thus plainly.pointing out spr$z-?? the evils to which we at?- exposed J I am talking to those who are the sheep and the lambs committed to my care-of course I cannot preveutit if my remarks go further than my flock. I do not wish to regulate or control any one else. If others hear of them, what is God's truth in them will do good, what is not will perish, as it ought to perish. But this I say to you, my people : "If ye be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God." Train your children for God. Keep them out of the evil-let them be old-fashioned, let them be out of the charmed circle of the bTst so^TSty^recaember you have given them to Goda&d they are members of Christ-children of God and heirs oftbe Kingdom of Heaven, pledged lo fight manfully under 9?s banner against sin, the world and th?\????i?-Boaf-^off up thus. Then if God should lay His hand uponTtheur and gather them to Himself, you will be saved the sting which must come to every sensitive heart that you had not exposed them to the influences t)f a theatrical exhibition; when you lie down to die yourself you will have ihc.comfort of going away to God to tell Him'you had tried to bring up-the children ,00 earth He had given you-, in th?^iiurtur? and admonition of the Lord.
