Safe K?Wm, MORALS ANO PHILOSOPHY. * ?fcev. C. C. BSOWK. Editor. AK JLRSWJBBBB PBAYEB. "O* give ag?message of qoiet," I ask. ts my morning prayer; **F#r the turbulent trouble within me Is more than my heart can hear. 0 Around there is strife and discord, And the storms that do not cease, And the whirl of the world is on me Stott onry can'st gire me peace." I opined the old, old Bible And looked at a page of Psalms, Till toe wintry sea of my trouble Was smoothed by hs summer calms. For the -words that hare helped so many, A nd the pages hare seemed more dear * Seemed new to their power to comfort, And they brought me my word ef cheer. Irffce mane of solemn singing ' These words came down to me ; .The Lord is slow to anger, And of mercy great is be. Each, generation praiseth Bis work of long renown ; tile Lord upholdeth alt that fall, And rabeth thc bowed down." Tfeatgate me the strength I wanted ; I knew the Lord was nigh ?v All that Was making me sorry Sf oatt be better by and by. 1 had bat to wait in patience, And keep at my fathers side, And nothing woold really hart rae, Whatever might betide. Captain Robert Robert was kept in the house by a told, so he flattened his nose against the grass and watched a military pro? cession pass by. They were iu very gay uniform, with very bright buttons, ~ kept step beautifully. Robert watched until the last glim of their brightness disappeared T> cprnert then tamed with a uwaich his mother place pies in the oven, and say to her : .tywu^jd tike to be a soldier." ^e^*w*B,,,?- said' his -^mother, I "then I would be." A soldier's life is amci ia easy one, of course. Clare, /.fraud ne that other pie ; I eas make room for ft.79 r, I don't know what yoa?oean," Robert said. **???*t? Yon. haven't forgotten the verse we talked about so long : 'Greater ts be that raleth his spirit than be that taketh a city V It takes real soldier-like fighting to rule a spir? it, I eau tell yon." "Ob," said Robert; and he flatten -ed his nose against the glass again .?ad-thought. "But mother," he said, at last, "1 .didn't.mean that kind. 1 would like *t?- be a captain aud have soldiers un "Nothing easier," his mother said, 'shutting the oven door with a satis? factory air. There are yonr ten fin? gers, and yonr eyes, and your ears j iand that' troublesome tongue that bates to obey. I pity any captain .who bas as troublesome ones." Robert laughed. Ile had so many talks with his mother that he under? wood ber very Well; yet this was a new way of pntting it. He stood there a good while thinking about it, deciding that be woold be a captain forthwith, and that his soldiers should wey perfectly. Then he wondered what orders he should have to give them first. Poor fellow! In less than ten min? utes from that time he knew. " He went to the sitting room to find that baby Carrie had been there be? fore, bim. There lay his birthday books, bis beautiful "Family Flight" on libe floor, some of the loveliest pic? tures in it torn into bits. Iiis photo? graph album was on the sofa; but chubby fingers had togged at mam? ma's, picture until it lay loose and ruined, and papa's page was gone en titely. Oh, bow angry was captain Robert ! He wanted to run after Carrie and slap her naughty fingers ; she was almost two years old, and ought to knew better Ile wanted to run to Iiis mother, and with a red face and angry voice to tell his story of wrong, and demand that Carrie be whipped Se wanted to bury his head in the so? la cushions and cry just as loud as be could roar. Why did he none of those . ?iings ? Just because he re? membered in time that lie was a cap? tain and bad soldiers to obey him. "Pa?t !" be said to his feet as they were about to rush away ; and they instantly obeyed. "Stop !" he haiti to the tears, as they began to rush in torrents up to his eyes; and back they all went, save one little straggler, who rolled down his nos*?, and was instantly wiped out of existence, lu abort, Ute boy proved himself a good captain, for that time at least. Ile even sent his feet up stairs presently with a rosy-cheeked apple for Carrie, and bade his arms give ber a very loving bug, which they immediately ^ Mamma-found ont all about it, as mammas almost always do ; and when papa came home at night, what did be do but bow low and say : - r'<?aptarn~R?>beri, 1 am proud- to salute you. I hear you Irave fought a battre aud won a victory to-day." -Pansy. Like Mother. y_ We hare all read and been touched by the story of the b^y who told his mother that when be grew up be was going to marry a lady just like her. I think the following incident is equally touching and beautiful : Little Arthur B., a three-year-old child, watchiog his mother at ber household work, and looking up affec? tionately at her, said : *I hope I'll grow up to be a lady !' .Why,' said the mother ; *do you like ladies better than men ?' .Ye-es P was the answer. .Well/ said his mother, 'if you grow up to be a man perhaps you can get some nice lady to come and live with you ; that is the way men do.' He looked up with a very bright face, and said : .Well, *oo come and live with me when I am a man.' Tbs Revised Old Testament, which nears completion, will provoke much eritieiaim. Many of the mysterious pi inges, which are difficult or impossi? ble of explanation, have been made and the good people who love juat for the sake of mystery. My Husband. Can there be found sweeter, dearer words to a fond, loving wife, than these, 'My hosband V He is her life, her world ; without him existence would be a dreary blank. Should adversity and disgrace, darken his name, she but loxes him the more for his sufferings. No music is sweeter to her ear than his welcome step and voice. No picture that hangs on memory's wall, more beautiful than her bridal eye, when she vowed to love, honor and obey lum, her idol, her soul's worship. She would not wish the wings o? time to pluck from her memory one word of love, or an act of devotion from him to her ; no ! she prizes them more than earth's riches. She would not wish Fame's hand to twine one garland around her brow that was unshared by him Her love spreads beyond herself and reaches far into futniity. She pic? tures him in her mind's eye as aged and infirm, lingering on the shores of | time, awaiting the last dread sum? mons to waft his immortal soul to the region of the blest. Does her love cease then, or grow cold ? No, it grows brighter, until she, too, joins lier loved one, her husband in the land where all is love, joy, peace and hap? piness. The Children of the Rich. Wc once heard a thoughtful minister say, with a toue of deep sincerity, tLat there were few persons coming, within the limit-? of pastoral oversight more .to be pitied than the children, especially the daughters, of rich members of the Church With few exceptions, wealth creates a worldly atmosphere iu the i home. It is supposed to render neces? sary certain social courtesies which bring the families of professed Christians'into near alliance with purely wordly circles, or with merely formal church-goers. With these classes the whole round of worldly pleasures seems to have a legiti? mate claim upon the time aud attention of those who move in certain circles, and no opportunity is left for the con? secration to higher services for the glo? ry of Gdtl and the good of man. even if any desire remains unquenched for such work. An Anecdote' of Peter Cooper. The head of the woman's art school of Cooper Institute writes of Peter Cooper, iu the December Century: *'One day he stood watching the por? trait class, who, to the number of thirty pupils or more, were drawing likenesses of the same model from dif? ferent positions. One scholar made the face in profile ; another had it turn? ed a little into the shadow, a third saw more of the full face ; while others worked still further into or away from the light. He had stood observing the scene for a few minutes, when he said: 'Such a sight as this should bc a lesson in charity when we perceive how the same person may be so different accord? ing to the way he is looked at by va? lions people. Some church members live on the faith of other people, the aggregate j faith of the church constituting in their view a sort of joint stock, in which they assume to be equal sharers. Hence when the church is dull they they have no faith, but their faith is lively during a revival season. In truth,.they have no faith at all, and. if they understood themselves, would find that what call faith is not an abiding principle within, as true faith always is, but simply a passing emotion.-South? western Methodist. When churches can no longer be sus? tained without ret-orting to some of the modern methods of raising money, such j as gay worldlings delight in. we would say, 'Let them go down 1' Those churches that cannot he supported in a legitimate way have no right to exist, for they glorify the Devil more than God. They demoralize and weaken rather than strengthen, the workers in the kingdom of Christ.-Ecangical Messenger. .- - ? i - A well-to-do farmer from the country told a citizen of our town that the dry ticket had airea ly saved him ?20. It realizes that 95 Per Cent. uf all diseases aris? from deranged kicfneys and liver, and it strikes at once at the root of the difficulty. Indicating by a sweep of his ann the waters the boat was passing over, he said to a passenger from the North : 'When I was twciveyears old I kill? ed my first hear on a new plantation my fath er was then cutting out of a forest that grew directly over the waters of this bend. That was a mighty good plantation, and there was right smart of bears there, too. But ?hal one thousand acres of land went iuto the Missis? sippi years ago.' It is putting no strain upon the figure t?> say that great forests uf youthful hope, wo? manly beauty and mau ly strength are swept in the same way every year into thc great, turbid torrent of disease and death. Vet it should nut lie so. That it is so is a disgrace as well as a loss. People are largely too care? less or too stupid to defend their own in? terests-the most precious of which is health. That gone, all is gone. Disease is simple, bul to recklessness or ignorance the simplest things might as well be complex as a proposition in Conic Sections. .As the huge Western rivers, which so often flood the cities along their shores, arise in a few mountain iprir.ys so all our ailments can be traced to impure blood and a small group of disordered organs. The most effective and inclusive remedy for disease is Parker's Tonic. It goes to the sourcesxif pain and weakness. In response! to its action, the liver, kidneys, stomach and heart begin their work afresh, and disease is ! driven out. The Tonic is not, however, an intoxicant, but cures a desire for strong drink.
