He urged M . vpofrtbctn the necessity of sustaining ' ike work, and asked for ?150. He ' : fca* tie reputation of being able to get V whatever sum he asks for, but this time only got about iialf of the .:a?ocat wanted. Kev. A. J. S. g^ttorair preached Saturday night at ' o'clock. After the sermon thc As? sociation waa called to order, and Col. g- Hoyt was ?K?ard in lite interests of the Baptist Conner The congrega U tiona have bee? large and attentive. SUNDAY. tbe people began to arrive at an early hour, and continued toc?me un t?Tabontone thousand were present. V. K?v. B. ?. Griffith "addressed the Sunday School in Iiis funny way, keeping his hearers in a good humor all of the time. Oe was instructive and entertaining. The seats on the floor of the Chu rch *f were feing rapidly filled with ladies ; ; The men having to go into the gai ' leriea. Every available space in the aisles, in front, and on eat:h side of the pulpit, had chairs in it; while some sat on the pulpit steps, and others stood around the doors, lu the galleries, there was a jam. jr-Kev. C. A. Stately preached from the text :'Who are God's wit ; nesses?' He prefaced his discourse by saying that : 'No one will deny the existence of God. 'The Heavens . declare the glory of God; the firmament sbeweih His handiwork. Day unto r;-?ay ntterelh speech ; and nigM unto night sbewcth knowledge.' 'Heaven, ' Earth, Nature, and Revelation are God's witnesses.' 'But there is anoth 1- er witness : Jesus Christ the oul\ be gotten Son of God, itt taking upon himself the form of sinful man, willi alf of our infirmities, yet with? out sin j, and iu His death on Calvary bore testimony to the un? bounded love of God. His death is the only basis upon which a dying soul can meet au angry God.' 'There ia yet another witness: The Holy .Spirit working in the hearts c " v?en and reconciling them to God.' 'And | Christians are God's witnesses.' ! There arc four conditions which a good witness-must fulfil: 1st. Her must know something about the case. To pat up one who knows nothing apoot the case is extreme folly. 2nd. How much does he know ? Iiis testi? mony is important in proportion to his knowledge. 3rd. Where did he ^ get his information ? it must not be . hear say or from a third party, he ' tnost oe an eye-witness, and 4th. Is be reliable** Does his testimony bear cross-examination ? will it agree with ir? life ont of the witness box ? If he, in the witness box, testifies for God, Add outside, joins hands with the devil, be is doing God injury.' *There are three ways of testifying : ? 1st, By speaking ; 2nd, By writing ; 3rd,' tty acting. But all cannot apeak, then possibly they can write. John Bunyan was shut up in Bedford jail for 12 years, he was not permit? ted to preach ; but he dreamed, and the result was that he wrote the Pil? grim's Progress, a book that has been second only to the Bible in the promotion of Christ's cause, and that will continue to do good until the j end of time. 'But there are those j who can neither preach nor write ; ?such can live for Christ ; and be daily witnesses for God.' Hts audience was spellbound for one hour and six minutes, and would gladly have listened an hour longer. We have but imperfectly given the outline of the prominent poi nts in bis At the close, the Pastor announced j that a table would be spread on the ' /grounds, to which the public were j invited. Ther congregation was then j dismissed, and the Association called ? to order. While the ladies were load- ? feg the tables with ail sorts of nice j things, the Association was closing ; J/J?^iijfe?sjs. After a very fervent j declared the Association adjourned. About one one hourwas spent in sup plviog tbe physical wanto of the con? gregation. At 2 o'clock the people began to go in the Church, and were all settled comfortably in their places by preaching time. Dr. J. C. For? man said that it would be impossible to give a complete history of Bethel from its organizado?, 100 years ago, np to the present time, as he had to j depend on the minutes of the Charles? ton Association, and they were broken. His text was : 'Now therefore are we all here present before God* to bear all things that are commanded thee o? God? from which he preached a short sermon : and continued by reading the minutes as far as they re? lated to Bethel, occasionally telling an iucident of its history not on the minutes., but either known to him or related by friends. Dr. Furman said that at a meeting of the Association held at Bethel fifty-five years ago, a young man who had just come np from Charleston, was to preach his trial sermon. *TItose of you whose heads are gray probably remember the faltering boy who tried to preach to you, and he uow stands before you a somewhat faltering old man.' Sacred memories seemed to well up in Dr. Furman*s mind, at tinos almost choking his voice, lt was a pleasure to he>r him recount reminiceuccs of the good men who have at times fed the ?<>ck with Manna from God's word. With some ol them, Dr. Fur man was intimately acquainted. Thehymn8, in both the morning aud evening services, were those grand old melodies that are familiar to all. The congregation was dismissed at 4 o'clock ; aud again we are in the old routine of every day life. God grant that we may better per? form tlie humble duties of our lives ; and may His blessing rest upon all who were present at any time during those sacred hours. OCCASIONAL. Privateer, Nov. 5, 1883. A firm faith is the best divinity ; a good life the best philosophy ; a clear conscience the best law ; honesty the best policy, and temperaste thc best physic. The real wealth of a man is the num? ber of things which he loves and bless? es and by which he is loved and blessed. The surest way to make ourselves agreeable to others is by making them feel that they are so to us. We shonld have all our communi? cations with men, as in the presence of brod ; and with God, as io the pre? sence of men. Hence, to cure the the disease the cause must he re? moved, ?nd ia no other war can a core ever be effected. WARNER'S SAFE KIDNEY AND LIVER CURE is established on just this principle. It realizes that 95 Per Cent. of all diseases arise from deranged kidneys and liver, and it strikes at once at the root of the difficulty. The elements of which it is composed act directly upon these great organs, both as a food and restorer, and, by placing them in a healthy condition, drive disease and pain from the system. For the innumerable troubles caused by un? healthy Kidneys, Liver and Urinary Organs; for the distiessing Disorders of Women ; for Malaria, and for physical derangements gen? erally, this great remedy has no equal. Kendall & Co., Gents:-I think it my duty to render you my thanks for ben? efits and profits which I have derived from your invaluable and far fame of Spavin Care. My cousin and I had a valuable stallion, worth S-iOO which had a very bad spavin and wns pronounced by four eminent- veterinary surgeons, beyond any cure, and that the hone was^ done forever. Asa last resort I ad? vised my cousin to try a bottle of Kendall's Spavin Cure. It had a magical effect, the third bottle cured it and the horse is as well as ever. Dr. Dick of Ko i ti burg, the eminent veterinary surgeon was an uncle of mine, and I take great interest in assisting hts pro? fession. JAMES A. WILSON, Civil Engineer. ZEUDALtfS SPJLTZK CTJ3Z. CHARLESTON , S. C., July 22, 1883 Dr. B. J Kendall & Co., Dear Sirs :-I pmv chased nt Louisville, Ky., a very fine bre? colt, and in shipping be got his hock badly hurt on tiie outside of the joint which caused it to swell three or four times the natural sire, which made him very lame. I tried a great many liniments which failed to benefit the injured part. At last when disgusted, and ready to give up the colt as mined, I happened to see your advertisement ef "Ken? dall's Blister and Spavin Cure," and thought I would give it a trial, I first applied the "Blister" to the bock which by this time had become calloused, and io mr surprise found it work like? charm. In twenty fonr hours the part that was hard became soft ?nd the lameless began to leave. I then got sorao of "Kendall's Spavin Cure'' and applied it ac according to directions T which has mr.de a perfect cure, and the colt is now as sound as any horse alive. I merely write this letter to you, as I think it a duty 1 owe to you, and also for the good of the public at large. The foregoing statement I will make affi? davit to, and can also have the same verified by the best horsemen in our city who saw the before and after treatment.
