Tbc Bcaujou Hospital at Parts has just witnessed a most interesting case of transfusion of .blood, which will pro pably result iu a cure. Dr. Salbe had ju bis employ a woman who was harass? ed with ? fatty tumor OD the neck, which weighed nearly eight pounds. Tired of living in the constant dread attendant ou such an affliction, the woman determined to have it cut out or ?ie under the operation. Dr. Sabbe at first refused to entertain the thought of performing the difficult, if not im? possible, feat but persuaded by the woman's entreaties and the threat that j she would take her life if he refused be undertook the operation, which he performed at the hospital clinic in the presence of a number of students. The courageous woman marched in? to the ampithcatre without a quiver and placed herself on a couch, where an anaesthetic was administered to the will? ing, patient. After working a half-hour the ablation was successfully performed and a salvo of plaudits greeted the sur? geon for the skill that be had display? ed. Abont sixty *artery catchers' held the principal vespers of the neck, whilst a full view of the carotid artery could be obtained as it throbbed some? what irregularly. The life of the pa? tient, however was for a time in great danger on account of the necessary loss of blood attendant onsucb an operation, and to save the patient's life ?he doctor was compelled to resort to the method of transfusion. A young and vigorous student named Lccomte offered himself to save the fast-, bbing life, aud his arm was uncovered. By the use.of the apparatus of Dr. Roussel!, of Geneva, which ope rates the transfusion of blood without contact to the air, 310 grammes of blood were injected into thc dying woman's body. Shortly afterward a spasmodic movement and a slight col? oration of the cheeks showed how effec ti ve the temcdy bad proven. This method is somewhat unusual, as during the last few years, transfu? sion was operated after the blood from the healthy body had been beaten to detach the fibrine, consequently the in? jected blood was not only imperfect, but the operation was -alike dangerous I to the two patients. The patient ts pro? gressing favorably and, thanks to the generous devotion of M Lecomtc, she will live to bless the day when her bravery led her to demand the exercise of Dr. Sabbe's skill-Paris Letter to the Phil delplria Times. ---~--??#<-^w^ Grace Reformed Church, Easton.
