Mr. Moses Furstenbunr. bas removed Ms j entire stock of goods to Manning, where be j will continue io general merchandising. I i Miss Lottie Blau-, daughter of the late Maj. i Blair, of Camden, .bas been in Sumter for f ( several days, visiting the family of Mr. P. H. ! j Ellis. ' ... . ! ! Rev. S. W. Weber, who was expected to j | preach at tEe Methodist Church on Sunday, j( was prevented-from filling his appointment, ! and tfie services were conducted as-usual by j Rev, Vh f. Cbreitzberg. There was uo service in the Baptist Church j 1 on.-Sunday, owing to the alienee of the j Pastor, wllo was attending the State Baptist j Con/entiou, at Darlington. Hon. Robert W. Barnwell died in Colum- j , bia on Saturday at 3 o'clock. His fuueral j | took place on Sunday at Trinity Episcopal j Church. A car load of convicts, cumbering about i 1 sixty, passed here last week on their way to : 1 work ou the Georgetown Railroad. Tom j Gardner and Roy Lee, former inhabitants of ! this place, were arno g the nu rn! er. Mr. H. A Hoyt returned with his bride on j lay. No ? efforts baree been sparta to nwtke it a r^tii- j i p?ete success, aud those who are fortunate ! enough tobe present will, no doubt, be repaid ; 1 for tbeir trouble. We publish elsewhere communications i from two anti-license men touching upon the : coming "wet and dry" election. Space will j be given for the expression of opinion from [ those holding opposite views, if desired, as \ ? we like to hear a fair presentation of argn- ? gumeutson botb sides of a question which I is likely to create much enthusiasm before j 1 being finally disposed of. j, An enterprising youug lady of this Coun- j ty is preparing to engage in the business of j , raising feathers for the market. She iu'ends j purchasing a number of geese, and ts satisfied : that it will pay handsomely. We knew of a I young maa in the "goose" business hut he ii J uncertain whether it will pay or not; He ! . only has one goose. ! , We publish elsewhere the schedu.o of the j freight trains ou the W., C. k A", and Central ! ; Railroads, which bas been kindly furnished ! > us by Mr. Alfred .Brand, for the benefit of ! those desiring to useihein for traveling-the . ] arriva! and departure of these trains not 1 being noticed witl? the schedule of regular j passenger trains. ' ] The numerous friends of Mrs. Wm. Singie- j ; ton will regret to hear the announcement of j ; ber death, which occurred on Saturday . ; night. She was a most estimable Christian j lady, st devoted member of the Methodist ; : Church and the mother of a large family of \ ' e-hilaren all of whom are grown. Though j these may suffer JUL irreparable loss they are j : fortunate in hav-iug been benefit ted by her j j faultless example and religious training [ through tbeir tenderer vears. She died after j a long aud painful illness which was borne j with fortitude^ Her funeral took place ou { yesterday morning at the family residence, ? aud was conducted by Rev. Ii. F. That old and reliable company, the j Wanio, bas opened the Winier campaign. ! See advertisement. ? Foar inches of snow feli at Cekesbury j " November 20. Dr. Alonzo Webster, the famous j Republican demagogue :>f Orangeburg, j r evidently intended mischief at the late j . election. On November 24th two large j h boxes marked "firearms" were deliv- j 0 ered to the Reverend politician by the ] South Caroliua Railroad authorities. ! n They evidently came too hite for their j ? intended use. This, coupled with j ^ several inflammatory speeches of Web- ? ^ sterr, place bim in an u^iy light before i the Orangeburg people. There were 17ria:iures tn thc United I State? during the past week, 4 more j than the preceding week, and 56 jiore ; than the corresponding week last year, j It ts estimated thal the cot top crop rj of this year will reach 7,000.000 bales, | thc largest ever raised in the history of ? the country. That of last year was j 5.435,000 bal?s. and that of the year ? before was 6,289,000 bales, being the i targast ?Ter produced down to that j mt. A Narrow Escape. An attempt was made last week to take the life of Mr. DeSaussure Bull, of Statebnrg Township, by means of poison. Mr. Bull is the owuer of a saw-mill a^d employs a num uer of banes. His attention was called to the steak which was prepared for breakfast on one morning last week, by the cook, who said "it did not taste quite right," and in? duced him not to eat it. A piece was given to a dog, wliich it killed, and tbe remainder was brought to Sumter and on examination proved to contain strychnine. Two ounces of the meat produced convulsive twitchiugs in !*. dog in seventeen minutes, and caused his death in two and a half hours. It has been iearned that a negro fron Stateburg bought a drachm of strychnine from the drug store of Dr. A. J. China, on the 2d instant, and another drachm from Dr. J. F. W. DeLorme two days afterward. No arrests have been made as yet. - TUB-?^-.v?^--? C. I. Hoyt & Bro., make a specialty ol re? pairing watches, jewelry, &c.
