John Brown a colored man said to be from this vicinity, was run o ver and killed, by a train at Florence on last Wednesday night; It is supposed thst he was druuk aud went to sleep on the track. The Good Templars are on a boom. Nearly all our young nu-n have joined them, and the cry is "still they come." Whiskey is in no demand. Mark Twain says, no matter what else fails Sn New England, they are aHvays sure to have a plenty of weather. We begin to feel New Eng!andish. [ During the recent cold snnp, a negro boy k drove into Darlington with a bright fireburn W ing in the bottom of his cx-cart. O necessity, you bow to no law. The rarest, queerest and choicest evenings are spent in the "club." If you do not, un? derstand this cttbaHist?c term, so much the worse for you. Small-pox is pronounced epidemic over the United States, but the rumors of its being in Sumterare false. A man with a freckled f;<ce is avoided now, and an urchin with two sores on his nose could^creatc a stampede in the hulls of Congress. A number of our citizens have concluded to .waste no more time trying to get rich, and ure profitably passing the time shooting par? tridges. Yesterday was the birth-day of the prettiest girl ic Sumter. Boys don't ask every one you see-this week when she was born, but give her the beuefit of the doubt. Another Darlington item reads thusly : "Mr. M.A. Mu?drow has two heads of water in his mill-pond. Reckon one of them is the one he missed last summer." Amen. Pink-eye is taking off a number of horses in this section. We had an idea of suggest? ing the fact that corn is good for horses s. id to have pink-eye or any o her kind of an eye. Some of our sober-minded young men who believe ir. innocent sport, are talking about getting np a private tea-pin Ailey. , Put us down for a cocked-hat game with the boss striker. We have come down upon thai game until our chin smote the floor. We learn that Senator Bossard met with an accident on Thursday last, which delayed his return to Columbia for a day or two. h seems that a trunk which was being taken from the car, fell upon his foot, bruising it and causing great pain. We hope he is, by this time, well again. The colored fire Company paraded yester? day afternoon. Judging fron: what we could see and hear, we are of thc opinion that tue capacity of their lungs was more thoroughly tested than that of the hose. A two-horse walking cultivator, on the street next to Mr. Altamont Moses7 Store a?- ; tracted considerable attention, and caused some curious comments from some who are ! not up to the improvements of thc times in agricultural implements. We are so glad. Nobody ever asks us now j what '.Cerne and see thy !i"!c* Johnny" ! ..... ' 1 means ; nor is our earsrefrcsheu wi j ii s nat cues of i?Dem golden slippers." This is aa age of,' progress. I The Darlington man throws mit this . gentlt hint to a young man engaged ::J a j courtship: "Xi?! ye youiig gallant who is ju-larking ?vcr this way. beware of a mess of heels." This, we judge, is choice ChestvrSeld English. School Commissi ,r.er Rhamc, mounted up? onga, champiag Uosinaate, is making a pros? pecting tour amo::g thc public schools. If he : should never return, and is kidi;-?pped on the way, we shall tearfully inscribe upon Li* head-piece-?/to*(uus cs!? rolon'/publico. A ?little commotion was occasioned hist j Saturday afternoon by the sight of twenty- ' fire railroad hands racing through Malu Street . after John Craig, whose legs were m< big ! bke drem stick beating :he "long roll." On ! investigation tl>e police found that Joh:. The occasion could nolle called a penny affair if the number of brides out bas anything to do with changing thc de? nomination of such meetings. Mr. Wesley Villeneuve says he will leave Sumter for Macon, Ga., the latter part of this week. We wish him success, and hope he will "bold his own" wherever circumstances may direct bim, as well as he did in Uid Yorktown. D, J. Auld has an assortment of handsome Valentines, astonishingly cheap. Sale?ay. Quite a crowd were la town yesterday. A number cf "Lien'' horses and mules were sold, and we understand very good prices were realized. A number of owners of the Delinquent Land advertised by the County Auditor paid ap and stopped the sale of their property, and the balauce of the tracts were disposed of by sale and forfeiture. If you want a Valentine-comic or senti? mental-go to Schweriu's. Court Convened yesterday with Judge Kershaw on the Bench and Solicitor Dargan in attend? ance. The Judge charged the Grand Jury as to tbeir duty in ascertaining evidence from testifying witnesses safiicient to find a true biil : that it was their business, if they knew of any public offense or anything that worked injury to the community or county, to inves? tigate and to bring same to public attention , that the police force was under their supervis? ion, and all misdemeanors of that body must be acted upon by them. The Grand Jury : were also reminded of their duty in regard to ; the different public offices and institutions, i and to make kuown the condition of same to j the Court. In refering to the dissatisfaction iu many parts of the State in regard to some of the j laws passed by the Legislature, the Judge j said that the Acts of the Legislature should ! besauctioned by the people, inasmuch as it i stood as their expressions, and that if the: representatives err in thtir duty the people ; could send others there to repeal what was j objectionable and pass what may be accepta? ble ; but that he hoped lime and experience would only prove what uow seemed to be ob? noxious, to bc good and beneficial. After expressing the difference between a simple and a malicious assault, the Judge sent the Grand Jury to their room to act upoo the busiuess giveu them. A number of the Petit Jurors failing to be on hand, fifteen new Jurors were drawn and summoned. Schwei in can show you Valentines of any kind and at any price. The Express Agency. We failed last week to note the fact, which will bc a cause of regret to many, that our' old stand-by, Mr. W. A. Todd, had retired j from th-j Express Agency, and given place to '. Mr. W. Tl. Yates. c;orne of our oider citizens j will lind it hard to accommodate themselves to ! the uew order of things. Fer twenty-four ; years Mr. Todd has gone his daily and night- j ly rounds, Erst to meet the trains and after- ; wards to deliver the packages. By his un- 1 tiring faithfulness, he has commended himself j to the entire community, and we are loth to j give him up. During his twenty-four years of Service, though he has had to meei trains j day and night, he has never missed but three ; trams, and this too while he has gone into j age above his eightieth year. Wc reluctantly bid ihe cx-expess agent ; good-bye, wishing for him that the sunset of a life spent in honest toil may bc mellow and beautiful, and that lie may realize the blessed? ness of a pure and easy conscience. We welcome Mr. Yates to his new office, ' and hope that he may prove as efficient and' acceptable to thc- people as his predecessor. ; [For the Watchman and Southron.] Messrs. Editors: I notice in your inst issue an appeal from j "Patron/7 that measures be taken, in view of ' the speedy exhaustion cf tito "Public.Fund}*' j to keep the Graded School in operation till the usual time fur the ?ummer vacations :o j begin.
