OUR OFFICE. j The Office of the Watchman and j Southron has been permanently estab- j ?ished at the old Stand of the True} Southron, opposite the Court House, | where we shall be pleased to see our : patrons and the public generally. Cotton is holding up at lOi for middling, j Bead the Town Clerk's card in another col- j nmn. It will be of interest to Sumter folks, j The police will have their hands full this j week. Popskull will assert itself, and the j town treasury will be helped. Our space is so limited as to compel ns to leave out half of the accoant of the Yorktown j Centennial. Mr. W. M. Graham received a car load of j tine horses on Saturday If you desire a good j trade, call on William. The Black River Union of Baptist Churches meets with the Bethel Church on-Friday "A friend in need is a friend indeed," and j so it wiil be to-morrow night at the Firemen's j, Concert. j The County Fair opens to-day. We are ? satisfied that every effort bas been put forth -j ; to make the occasion one of profit and inter? est. Tbere*are parts of the pavement on Main j Street which should be repaired in order to j1 avoid the puddles of water that collect during ] a rain. Show your appreciation to the Fire 1 Company by going out to the Concert to-mor- j, row evening. j < People continue to ask the meaning of, !1 "Come and see thy little Johnny." Nothing j bot modesty prevents our making the revela- j tion. s The drought is still prevailing over most j parts of the New England States, while in the j i North-west freshets and floods are working j ? destruction Things seem to be out of bal? ance. Mr. Willie Mayes and Miss Janie Chandler were united it? matrimony on Wednesday af? ternoon, at the residence of Mr. Baltman, by Her. a C. Brown. ! | i , The largest potato of the seasoc, that -.ve ! J hare seen, was left at our office yesterday, by j ^ Acting Sheriff Julius Edwards. It is of the j [ Southern Queen Variety, and was raised on ! c bis lot in town. Weight over four pounds. | ' IWhile all magner of settlements are being j made, we hope our patrons will cot fail to j remember the little bills we have against j [hem. We are trying to get ap a good newsy paper, and while we do not propose io boast 1 that it is the "best in town," we are willing J j to let our sheet stand or fall upon its own ? merits, without .any extra blowing on our j c part. i i Some of the Yorktown troops fainted on j 1 parade. Mercy on ns i how big a faint there I t would have been if the parade had been j s cheered up by mus?: of whistling shells and i c hissing bullets. O ? grim-visaged war, Keep ! j your ruffled front smoothed down. You look } N better thus. Don't forget the firemen will be as glad to ? * see voa at the Concert to-morrow night as ! t i you were to see them when your house was ! t on fire. ic t Our town was enlivened last week by Prof. Zera Semon who gave four entertainments in j i the Music Hall. Valuable presents were given j aw:iy each night, our colored population com- j ingio for the best share. The presents were ? the main attraction, though some of the tricks j a were well performed. In ventriloquism he j c was not the equal of the Powell Bros. The tax collector's office closes next Monday, j r The rush at his office this week will be im- f ! L raeose, as over one-third, possibly nearly half j c the tax- payers are yet to settle up. Some ? will learn, when the penalty h?s been added, j ' that it is never wise to put off for to-morrow j 1 what can be done to-day. j c Mrs. Wbite and Miss Miller invite the ladies i generally to call at their store, corner of Main j and Republican street, and look at their fine I . assortment of Millinery Goods, kc. The Pablic Schools of the County will open on next Monday, or as soon as possible there after. Teachers who have not had an oppor? tunity of being examined will be allowed a j * chance on next Friday, the 28th. See adver- i tisement. j F. Messrs F. H. Folsom & Bro., of the up town ! " Jewelry Store, have recently ma<ie additions ! to the outfit of their establishment, and laid i in an attractive stock for the fall trade. Look for their handsome new sign, and give them ! d a call. I c Kew Dates, Prunes, Raisons and Currants at Scbwerin's. ! r _ M| | | j__ j Grand Ball To-night. In compliment to Prof. Agostini, his friends j and pupils have arranged for a" Grand Ball to- j night, for his benefit. It will, no doubt be a j " very enjoyable occasion, and those who can j ^ participate, will no doubt be on hand. j V - ? -j - Firemen's Concert. j The Concert to-morrow night, for the bene- j fit of the Sumter Fire Engine Company, ? c promises to be unusually attractive. No ef- ? forts baTe been spared to make it meet the j ^ wishes of the most fastidious. The pro- I p gramme bas been carefully prepared, and an ? evening of pleasure will be realized by all ! ^ ? who will attend it. Besides, for the sake of j u 1 patronizing home talent, it is the duty of ? - fte very, citizen to go out to this Concert for the j cause for which it ts gotten up-a cause upon ? which the Town of Somter is dependent in ? times of distress. We sincerely hope the ? Concert will be liberally patronized. Seed Oats, Bagging and Tics very low at ! A Scbwerin's. ! L - ! A Guiteau's Insanity Plea. WASHINGTON, October 18.-It is now an- j d nonnced by Mr. Scoville, counsel for Goitean, j that all questions of jurisdiction and mal- ! ? practice will be waived and the defense will . ] take their stand on the plea of insanity alene. j This determination has been arrived at be- j A cause of the short time in which they have to j \u prepare for trial, and because of the discovery j v; of Guiteao's application sometime ago fora j t; pension. Gniteau had never been in the ; c. army and the medical examiner endorsed ; ?r upon tbe papers ??I?s:ine." qi --^w- -: ta "Don't know half their value." ; 0< 'They care me of Ague, Biliousness and di Kidney Complaint, as recommended. I had : h? a half bottle left which I used for my two . ai tittle girls, wbo the doctors and neighbors j ar said could not be cured. I would have lost j both of them one night if I had not given j Ie them Hop Bitters. They did them so much j en good I continued their use until they wore ce cored. That is why ? say you do not know half the value of Hop Bitters, and d<> n'.t re- . th commend them high en o ii s h."-B., Rochester, . N. Y.-American Rural Home. OUR COUNTY FAIR Opens to-day, and although thc drought bas been most unfavorable for a complete success agriculturally, every other means bas been resorted to to make np for this deficiency, and from lae present prospects it will not fall far short of what might have been if cir? cumstances had been otherwise. The country people show their wisdom when they lay aside all home duties and labors, and devote so many days to the County Fair, for unless it is attended and backed up by our own people it is hardly probaWe it will be attended and sustained by others from the adjacent counties. The financia: worth of an Annual Fair to a county j can only be estimated by comparing those ! that have never had any with those that have, j It invariably brings capital fi om all parts of j the State, and from other States to be cir- j culated to the benefit of the county in which j it is held. It infuses the spirit of competition j in every farmer to try to do his best from ! \-ear to year in order to excel his neighbor j farmer m producing the different agricultural I commodities, thereby unconsciously laying j the foundation for the highest state of culti ration. Also a County Fuir is one of the be;t ! places for amusement and enjoyment whit h j is very essential to the well being of the hard j working farmer. COLUMBIA, October 20.-Dr. John Lynch a brother of Bishop Lynch, died at his home in Columbia of Brights disease. He had been suffering with it a long time, bnt has been confined to his bed only about a week. He was born near Georgetown, S. C., January 8, 1819- His father was Conlaw Lynch, Esq., of Cheraw, S., C. About the year 1856 he removed to Columbia for advantages of education for his growing family, and con? tinued to reside and practice his profession there to the present time. He was appointed surgeon-general of the State during the late war, after tue death ol Dr. Gibbes, which position he continued to hold. He was a I professor in the Medical Department of the | University of South Carolina after its recon- j struction, subsequent to 1368, and retained ; tbe position until that institution was closed, i He leaves a widow and nine living children, j several cf them married. Also the widow of ti deceased son and several grandchildren. The Confederate Bond Crsa?. RICHMOND, VA., October 20.-The boom in Confederate bonds is daily increasing in pro? portion. There is a continued active dc.nand liere for them. An instance of this fact is that the banking house of Thomas Branch ?fe Co., to-day and yesterday bought one million dol? lars of them and /re still buying. Other lealers report a lively business in the same oonds. Go out io the damp air, or sit unprotected .o a draft, and your throat will feel sore ind your head uncomfortable. You have [aken a cold, which you can remove as promptly as you reeeived it by using Ay er's Uherry Pectoral. Sugar Cured, nncanvassed Pig Hams at 17 cents per pound at Schwerin's, try one. Wonderful Discovery. Gibson's Brain Tranquilizer.-This med:- ! ;i?ie seems to have quite a sale on account of j ts remarkable action upon the whole system, j In every case thus far, Epileptic Fits, and j Nervousness, hare been entirely overcome, md almost magic relief been given to old .-hronic cases of years' sta!.ding. Many home ?rtificates can be seen of the good results it las produced. To those afflicted, do not let :his opportunity pass without trying it. See advertisement. American Enterprise. No invention of the nineteenth century has j trorked a greater revolution in household I iconomy or conferred more of a benefit on hu- j nanity than the sewing machine. The first productions were crude and un- j x>uth in the extreme, and it was reserved for ; American skill and ingenuity to bring Jorth a j machine of any practical value. In order to appreciate the great advance- j n*nt which has taken place it is only neces- j arv to compare one of the machines built j turing the infancy of the invention with one j if the latest improved "Light Running New i lome," the rapidly increasing popularity of j vhich is the envy of all its competitors. In the manufacture of this machine old i deas have been discarded, and in accordance i vith the progressive movement of the age I tew mechanical principles have been substi- : uted of such inherent and absolute value as j annotfailto commend themselves to the j uost casual observer. For all kinds of domestic and maaufactu- j .ing work the New Home is unequaled. All the really good points contained in ! tiber machines have been utilized in its con? traction. Many new improvements and devices have .Iso been added, the result of which is a ma hir.e as nearly perfect as it is impossible to nakeone. For simplicity, durability, ease of manage- j nent, and capacity for work, thc "Light tunning New Horne'' has no rival, and the tappy possessor of one may rest assured that he ?r she has the very best the world affords. All who send for the Company's new il ustrated catalogue, and enclose their adver- i isement (printed on another page), will re- ] eive a set of advertising novelties of valus to j ard collectors.
