THE OLD FAMILY DOCTOR. Ptaawng of a Onoo Loading Figuro In Evory Community. The old family doctor is now but landmark. He is rapidly passing out of existence. He has been crowded from the city. His field of practice now includes the small country towns. Time was when the old family doctor was a member of the household. He was the father confessor, the family adviser, the counselor of ihe head of the family. His word was law. He commanded more re pect from the children than the president of the United States ever will command. He was the doctor of all the ills the flesh might fall heir to. He O onl/1 an /I f over ho cot. fl VIUVVL a WiU (Miu *v I v* j broken leg or arm; he was the physician who treated troubles of the ?sr, throat and eye; he was the food Samaritan who walked with suffering woman through the valley of the shadow of death; he was a potent factor in the affairs of many homes; his field of labor was ft rugged one; he labored well and faithfully, but the old family doctor lived in an age when the doctor did a general practice. We live differently in our present day and generation. We live in the age of specialism. There arc ear specialists, nose specialists, eye spe cialists, fever specialists, physicians who make ft specialty of children's diseases. There are specialists who confine their efforts to relieving the suffering ">f the feet. There are neurologists who do nothing but treat disordered nerves. If your heart is affected you go out in search f a physician who makes this vital function of life his specialty. If you should ask the average doctor of today to extract a tooth he would laugh and refer you to a dentist, yet the time was when the family physician did not hesitate 10 pull a tooth. Ask the average physician what to do for an ulcerated eye and he will promptly wash his hands and politely suggest to you to consult an oculist. However anxious a physician may be to serve you, he stands on ethical grounds and because of such sentiments feels that it is his duty to so advise you. Yes, the day of the old family nhvsician is a dav of the past.? Memphis Commercial-Appeal. National Parka. A Bear and a Log Jam. A big log jam that on one occasion blocked an Illinois river was broken in a peculiar manner. A browr bear was noticed by one of the rivermen prowling around the skids and later was observed crawling over the piled up timber. At Butanta, Brazil, there is the most remarkable and repulsive garden in the world. It is 700 acres in extent and is a garden of venomous serpents, which are maintained for purely scientific purposes. There are laboratories which produce serums for the cure and prevention of Ae effects of snake bite. The snakes are kept in a small park in order that their habits and the best methods of escaping their attacks may be studied. Wild Bm. Wild bees gather the nectar most freely in the buckwheat.
