NO. 36 AMERICANS FIRST ENGAGEMENT WKTH GERMANS-OVERCOME BY . SUPERIOR NUMBERS BACK A \ PRISONER TO CAMP. * Armed forces under the American flag have had their first clash with German soldiers in an attack which the Germans made on first line trenches whei? the United States troops nad been taken for instructions, and three Americans were Killed, Ave wounded and twelve captured or missing. The war department made this known Monday on receipt of a dispatch from Gen Persing showing that the German forces, soon after jearning the position of the new enemy from overseas, had launched a desperate effort to overcome them. The Tantnn attack came in the form of a heavy barrage fire, which isolated a salient of the American trench and apparently left a small force of Americans at the mercy of their enemies. Thai the American soldiers fought gamely is shown by Gen Pershing's report of a prisoner being taken by them. How some of his troops escaped to bring this German back with them is not told in k the brief dispatch of the American F commander. L The United States troops were taken in charge of vetern French K sc.diers to a region near the Rhi Heft M?rne canal, a quiet portion of the V long line that runs from the North W Sea to Switzerland, and for a few W days conditions were normal. Cable dispatches have been telling of cartillery activity somewhat, above 44 ? * . -mi ?4 x ? normal, outsuu noi ui huvluiu^ like the furious fire on other portions of the front. A rather cryptic Berlin official announcement told "of North American" prisoners being brought in. and this is taken in Washington to refer to the soldiers whom Gen Pershing's dispatch says are captured or missing Many French and British military writers warned America that Germany would hurl terrific blows at tbe Americans as soon as news of abeir location reached the German aide, and when the Americans went into the trenches war department official predidcted tnat this might happen. It was pointed out that this was a favorite trick of the Germans when Beitish territorials from Canada and Australia went into the trenches for the first time. The announcement also omitted to mention whether the trench had been captured. It is presumed, k however, that the attacking forces A inflicted as much damage as possible B in & short space of time and then rej treated to the protection of their I own earthworks before American reinforcements could arrive. The official statement issue by the "war department is as follows: "The war department has receiv 1 ' * IF YOU ARE BUYING YOl ELSE. ' King' Hardly The Popular K ed a d>9Datch from the commanding general of the American expeditionary forces, which stated that before daylight on November 3 a 9alient occupied for instruction by a company of American infantry was raided by Germans. The enemy put down a heavy barrage fire, rutting off the salient from the rest <>f rhe men. Our losses were three killed, five wounded and twelve captured or missing. The enemy's losses are not known. One wounded German i ___ _ .. ] was taKen prisuner. Gen Pershing's r?-aived lat-^ Sunday night bj f>- war department .gave the first me-ii-'e.- details of the first actual fighting experienced by America's oversea forces. Intimations of a conflict were had in dispatches from Berlin Saturday declaring that American prisoners had been captured. Y M C A Man Visits Kingstree. Kingstree was visited last Saturday by Mr Henry M Johnson, representing the War Work Council of the Young Men's Christian Association, which organization is doing : such valuable service for the enlisti ed men in the army and navy. I When seen by our reporter he j spoke with enthusiasm of the work I they engaged in. He stated that some 2,000 of their secretaries are 1 working to make life happier for the men away from home in the camps ; in this country, and about 900 have j gone overseas already with General i ' Pershing's army, and several bun- < i dred more will follow soon. The work done has met the hear-1 ty approval of men and officers. ! General Pershing has called on the j Association to supply trained secreI taries for the French army, and Maj ! Gen Hugh Scott, who recently rei turned from Russia, says it will mean much to the Russian troops. To carry on this great work will i 1 take $35,000:000, and of this amount | the South is asked to raise $1,500.I 000. North Carolina will raise $300,J 000, and South Carolina $260,000. j Governor Manning is Vice Chair- j man of the South Carolina commit i tee. It is expected that Williams| burg county will want to have tyer I part in providing this home touch; j among her soldier boys. Notice to White Teachers! FIRST EVENT OF THE KIND A GREAT SUCCESS-PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS ITEMS. Lake City, November 6:?The community fair on last Thursday, which was the first fair ever held in Lake City, was quite a success, and in saying that it was a success we do not say this after the manner of those who always use glowing terms in speaking of any event'which happens in their towns or communities, Knf wp ?n> nmncr thp word success coolly and deliberately and with full appreciation of the exact definition of the word. The visitors with whom we talked were outspoken and lavish in their praise. Many declared it the best community fair they ever saw, and some said it was equal in quality to the ordinary county fair. The displays consisted of products of farms and households of the surrounding country. The attendance, too, was excellent. Besides those living nearby, there were visitors from Timmonsville, Manning, Sumter, Georgetown, and so on. Mr H E McElveen has been elected assistant cashier of the Bank of Lake City for the term beginning the first of the new year* Mr Mcelveen has been agent of the A C L railroad at this station about four years, and has made one of the best agents Lake Uity ever had. it were needless to say that the patrons of the Coast Line and the Western Union will regret to learn of the chanage at this station. We understand that Mr McElveen will accept the position offered by the hank. Messrs J H BlackweH, W Wesley : Singletary, S W Gowdv. and W L Bass attended the sales in Kingstree i Monday. Good crowds are attending and a general feeling of satis^ faction manifests itself in all who enjoy high class, clean and wholesome entertainment. Evangelist Andrews and Singer Curry began a campaign at the Methodist church last Thursday. We understand that they will be here three weeks. The matter of keeping warm these days is becoming a serious matter. Coal cannot be had, and wood is very difficult to secure?so difficult, in fact, that the demand exceeds the supply many fold. There is plenty of wood in the country, but the trouble is, tnose wno nave tne wooo cannot get it cut. Labor is scarce. , and most of the kind we have will not work except on an empty stomach. As the cold increases this state of affaire is bound to cause suffering and perhaps worse. Mrs Delia D Carter has just re- \ turned home from a visit to her / daughter, Mrs Dr Jones, in Richmond, Va.
