It la tha Vibration, Not tha Wat or, That Movaa Forward. The first great thing to notice about a wave (a deep eea wave, not a shore breaker), is that, though the wave travels steadily forward, any given particle of the material in which it is traveling merely executes a to and fro motion. A wave is therefore the forward motion of a vibration, but not the forward motion of matter. It is, in fact, the motion of a motion. i ? 1 1 3- .J mere are two principal Kinas 01 waves, the transverse and the longitudinal, these names being given from the direction of the vibration of the medium. In the transverse wave the motion of the material is to and fro at right angles to the direction of motion of the ware. Here, for instance, I have a long strip of corrugated paper lying on the table. I lift one end quickly and bring it down again, a wave runs right along to the far end. Quite obviouslv the paper does not travel with tke wave; it merely rises and falls again at points successively farther and farther from my hand. The wave travels on, however, and is quite as clearly a wave as anv other you like to name. Here, again, is a rope stretching from one end of the hall to the other. I give it a transverse impulse by striking it sideways near one end, fAii fnA A TTTO rA rnnninrf olnnfr QLLU > VJU ac IIIV no*C iu.xixiii-Lg txxvxxg it to the opposite wall, where it ia reflected ;ind comes back to me. In a wave of the sea?namely, a surface wave in a liquid, the vibration is also transverse, that is to aay, any particular particle of water moves up and down as the wave passes along. You all know from experience that a cork on water merely bobs up and down and does not travel forward with the wave. If the water went forward, of course, the cork would go too.? Journal of the Royal Society of Arts. In a Bad Way. Illustrating the ill feeling that existed between the Whigs and the Democrats in the old days of Boone county, William H. Kennon, an attorney, told of a sheriff he knew who was a Whig and a cirruit judge who was a Democrat. A case was tried by jury. The visiting lawyer trying the case handed to the judge some instructions he had written out with a quill pen. The judge spent a good deal of time examining the instructions. The lawyer turned to the sheriff and said in a whisper, "I don't believe your judge can read writing." The sheriff whispered back, "He can't read readin', let alone 'ritin'."?"Bench and Bar of Boone County, Mo." Funny Notio??. Nearly every shop in Japan exhibits a placard printed in English advertising goods, some of which signs are very comical. "Horse shoe maker instruct by French horse leech," you read, or "If you want sell watch I will buy; if you want buy watch I will sell. Yes, sir, we will, we will. Uome at my shop. Watchmaker." A Japanese laundry company announced: "We most carefully and cleanly wash out customers with cheaper prices. Gentlemen, 85 cents a hundred; ladies, $1 a hundred," while a certain dairy announced that they sold "Extracts of fowls." Kata and Kita. An English clergyman visting this country was discussing the English accent. "Our worst accent," he said, "is the cockney one ? the one that turns, you know, 'make haste' into 'mike 'iste,' and so on. "I once engaged two maidserv ants. One was a Devonian, the other a cockney. They were twth named Catherine, but that fact caused no confusion in my household. I simply called the Devon girl Kate and the cockney Elite, and they always knew whom I was addressing." "Dinner of Deadly Enemies." Lady Randolph Churchill once gave at her house in Connaught place what she called a dinner of deadly enemies. "It was thought," si?va Afr f! W SmalW in his "Anglo - American Memories," "a hazardous experiment. It proved a complete success. They were all well bred people. They all recognized their obligations to their host ess as paramount for the time being. In some cases ancient animosities were softened Tn all they were suspended." Cologne Water.
