The Rev Will D Upshaw. alias the "Georgia Cyclone," a man of note as a pulpit orator, platform lecturer and editor, spoke to a large audience at the Baptist church here Sunday night notwithstanding the thunder storm that came up at the opening hour. On Monday night at the auditorium Mr Upshaw delivered his famous lecture on "John's Hat." The lecturer was again greeted by a splendid audience considering the fact that he had very little time to advertise. The lecture was of a hu-, morous sort and created much laughter among the auditors, although viewed seriously and from beneath "Johns Hat,"there was a deal of val uable food for thought. As a prelude to his address Mr Upshaw enumerated most of the famous Johns' from John the Baptist down to the present and included our own popular and efficient deputy clerk of the court, John Britton. A most enjoyable feature of the evening was the musical renditions by Mr David Silverman and Miss Claudia Jones. Mr Upshaw spent Tuesday here in the interest of a lyceum.and succeeded in getting guarantors for a series of high class attractions to take place here during the coming fall and winter. - 1 a.L ? wny not neip your iriena win me Piano? $12.50 worth of tickets driven for current purchases if you buy trade book. 6-14-2t Kingstree Furniture Co. The young people, and a goodly number of theeldera, of the Baptist] church enjoyed to the fullest a mostl delightful outing on the banks of Black river in an all-day Sunday(school picnic yesterday. Water is low in the river bed just now, exposing a splendid sand dune for the little tots to play over, and back of it was fine bathing for those who wanted to go in swimming. A number of the children took to the water like ducks and showed remarkable agility in the water. The smaller children enjoyed playing in the sand. A bountiful dinner was served the children about 12 o'clock, and they returned to the sand and water while preparations were made for the "grown-up" members and their guests. We had the pleasure of being among the latter and at 2 p. m. we were served a repast embracing nparlv everything that is good to ear, including an abundance of pine bark stew, fried fish, chicken, ham and all the accessory accompaniments; prepared and served by the good women of the church. It was a day well spent and one that will live in the minds of the children for some time to come. The County Commissioners have purchased what is claimed to be a very practicable tractor machine for road working purposes. The new machine was demonstrated here last week by the manufacturer's expert -machinists. The Merchants Trade Extension company seems to be gaining in popular favor daily. A number of young ladies are being boosted by their respective friends and hundreds of thousands of votes poured into the Kingstree Drug Company's store yesterday. The presents given away to the successful contestants are attractive as well as valuable.
