HUGHES TO RESUME PRACTICE OF LAW. REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENCY WILL GO BACK TO THE BAR. Lakewood, N J, November 27:? Charles E Hughes announced here tonight that on January 1 he would resume the practice' of law as a; member of the New York law firm of Rounds. Schurman & Dwight, 96 Broadway. His son. Charles E Hughes, Jr. also will enter the firm, it was stated. In 1906 when Mr Hughes was nominated for Governor of New York he was a member of the same law firm, but its title at that time was Hughes, Rounds & Schurman. With Mr Hughes again in the firm, its new name, it was announced, will be Hughes, Rounds, Schurman & Dwight. v Associated with Mr Hughes and his son will be Arthur C Rounds, George W Schurman, Kichard E Dwight, Walter F Carter, Raymond M Lowes, Martin J Keogh, Jr. Augustus L Richards and Harvey L ' .Stowell. ( , , I ADVICE TO ORCHARDMEN. i Some Good Roles For Baying j Fruit Trees. I In purchasing trees deal only with 1 reputable nurserymen, and elimi- ' naie the tree peddler as far as pos- < sib'e. Choose those varieties that i are best suited to your local conditions. Order the stock early, and have it shipped when the ground is prepared and you are ready to plant. ? As a rule, it makes very little dif- ' * 1 A Allt Terence wneu me uees aic ^uv. uui,i provided they are properly handled i and well matured stock is secured. When trees arrive, don't leave them ? in the express office for any length c of time. Remove and heel-in if you are not prepared to put them out. i If, on the other hand, the trees have dried out, bury in moist soil or sub- ? merge in water. s Inordering trees.demand that oneyear-old stock be sent, and accept no < "just as good" varieties. This is 1 especially true in regard to peaches, c apples, and plums. Trees two years old and older have had their f heads formed in the nursery row, ( and they are more difficult to transplant. The common notion that \ fruit will be secured quicker has been exploded, and it is common I knowledge that one-year-old stuff 11 jlives the most satisfactory results. First-class nursery stock should t be free from disease and insect t pests, should possess a well developed root system, and should be 1 straight and comely, and should ( 9 come true to name. Accept only f budded or grafted trees. Fruits * will not come true from seed, hence the necessity of grafting all stand- ( ard varieties. J Varieties are numerous, and no set of varieties will do well under varying conditions. Therefore, it is well for those contemplating the set- ^ ting of a new orchard to find out j just what varieties are suited to the , conditions at hand and order these. ( Novelties may be tried out on a small j ? scale, before hand and order these.?; The Progressive Farmer.
