PROTECT TAE BIRDS. The Farmer's Best Friends? Are Decreasing Rapidly. Columbia, October 26:?Our use- j ful birds, without the aid of which it would be impossible to grow crops successfully, are rapidly decreasing -? ? ' ? > U!o tforliMIC o in numoers. msu m mo <?i iuUU tivities is the main cause of this decrease. These facts and manv athers just as startling are strikingly brought out in a bulletin entitled, "Decrease of Birds in South Carolina," issued recently by the State University. This report is most interesting, and should be widely read and discussed. It is the result of an inquiry into the subject made by the State Audubon society. The evidence which forms its basis was furnished by competent unprejudiced observers in every part of the State. It is the opinion of most of these observers that the alarming decrease in our valuable wild bird life is due in a large measure to the carelessness, ignorance and greed of man. It is stated that man has turned loose on birds such destructive natural enemies as the English sparrows, dogs and cats; that he has brought to his aid in his direct destruction, improved fire-arms, smokeless powder, automobiles, etc. Burning over woods and fields, destruction of forests, and many other causes are cited as contributing to the decrease. In addition many suggestions are given for the better protection of birds. Most of the observers reporting from those counties having the resident hunting license law, are enthusiastic in its support. Many express themselves as anxious to see the law made State-wide with no exemptions. Many of the suggestions given are of vital importance and should rpppive verv serious consideration on the part of the public. Dogs roaming at large during the birds' breeding season are considered a great curse to ground-nesting birds, and a State-wide,high dog tax ia suggested as a remedy. Many consider dove-baiting as unsportsmanlike and suggest that it should be prohibited by law. South Carolina is advised to follow the good example set by Georgia in this respect. The deplorable fact is stressed that the public is wofully ignorant of the value of birds to man, the game laws and reasons for their rigid enforcement. One ob.-erver suggests: "Educate the public to know the value of birds, and they will then demand right laws and their enforcement." In the opinion of many, there should be a State-wide campaign of education as to the usefulness of birds, and hird studv should be compulsory in the schools. Every person interested in the material welfare of this State should read this report. Single copies may be had free by writing either to the Audubon Society, or to the Extension Department of the Stajte University, at Columbia. . ? Democrats Lose Congress. Washington, November 13:?Democratic leaders today admitted that it looked as if there must be a shift in at least three districts before they could hope to control the House of Representatives in the next Congress. Republicans still stick to their claims of 218, with two Pennsylvania districts in doubt, upon which the two parties may divide evenly. The result there will be determined when the solider vote is canvassed tomorrow. If the Democrats secure both these districts, in one of which a Republican was elected on the face of present returns, they would stil be short of votes enough to control the House. The President has been advised of the situation, and if it is shown that the official count in close districts gives the house to the Republicans, his recommendations to Congress for work during the next three months will be many. No man works harder for his town and neighborhood than the editor of the country newspaper. He puts in: l more hours and draws down less| j pay than any man we know. The biggest "booster" in the enI tire show is a bright, breezy, ag (gressive, progressive, newsy paper; I but the subscription list will barely j pay for the raw material. If you don't happen to like what he says about this, that or the other matter, go around to the office and have it out with him, but stay in the game. We are not always fair or reasonable. We insist that the editor whoop it up all the time, whether we contribute a cent or not. If we should steal a flock of sheep, he must not mention the fact, but if our neighbor does some little thing he ought not, why, he must be shown up, or we stop our paper and refuse to pay the back subscription. So there! We expect the editor to fight our battles, champion our cause, boost our business, advertise our families, cover up our deviltry, for the splendid sum of 3 cents a week. (Some of us are worse than that, as we do not even subscribe for the paper, let alone advertise our wares.) The man who can't afford to take his local paper can't afford to exist, and the man who can't afford to advertise can't afford to remain in business. No man does as much for the public, on as small pay, as the editor of a country newspaper. A dead newspaper means a dead town, and it is unreasonable to expect a live paper unless you support it. If your paper is no, good the chances are you are no good, and the thing for you to do is to quit dreaming, brace up, wake up, ginger up. tumble up?any way to get up. Start something, and the surest way to do that is to advertise.?Atlanta Georgian Dn.A fpnm I Ittlo CnOPVOC fiPMV DdU tUIUO IIUUI 1.1111b UUbbiiiu uaun.
