Salters, August 13:?The district Sunday-school institute which was held at Union church August 9 was much enjoyed by all. Though the absence of the district superintendents and other workers was a great disanoointment to us. vet Mr W M O'Bryan and Hon W D Bryan, who had charge of the work, conducted it admirably. A bountiful dinner was spread and enjoyed by all. We hope it will meet with us again. Crops throughout this section are very poor, no improvement of consequence since the storm and heavy rains of last month. It is gratifying to know that the government has taken hold of the matter and will furnish aid to those in need and work on the public roads for the next few months as a means of helping the destitute. We sincerely hope that the fund will be judiciously expended by those having the work in charge. Rev A R Woodson closed a meeting at Union church last Sunday. The attendance was good and continued to grow from day to day. Much interest was manifest. One united with the church, and we hear of others who expect to do likewise. Miss DamarisStubbs, who has been - - i ? 17 cu on a visit to iuiss aniline rtrncu, ui this place, has returned to her home at Bennettsville Misses Emmie and Leila Ferrell are visiting friends and relatives in Marlboro. Mrs C W Boswell received a telegram yesterday announcing the death of her N brother, Rev W H Thrower, in Spartanburg. We sympathize with them in their bereavemont Rev Mr Thrower served the Methodist church here for some time and was regarded by all that knew him as an excellent Christian gentleman. Look Out. Killed for Burglar. Greenville, August 12:?Mistaken for a burglar. Ro> Smith, the eightyear-old son of Sam Smith, a well known farmer of the Fork Shoals section, was shot and instantly killed last night by his brother-in-law, Jno Sullivan, at the latter's home. The Coroner's jury returned a verdict that the shooting was accidental, thus exonerating Sullivan. The little boy had gone to spend the night at the home of his brother-in-law, a short distance from his father's house. The family had gone to bed about 11:30 o'clock. Mr Sub livan was aroused by a noise at th^ back door. Taking his gun,he went to the door and, seeing a dark shadow, came to the conclusion that a. burglar was trying to break in. He opened fire and killed the youth almost immediately. Upon investigation, Mr Sullivan was (horrified to find that he had killed his little brother-in-law. J H Cole, a whisky constable, was arrested at Columbia Saturdaylmorning charged with drunk and disorderly conduct, carrying concealed weapons, and assault and battery, with intent to kill. Cole was tried before the Recorder and bound over to the court of general sessions of Kichla&d county under $500 bond, on charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. The other charges were dismissed.
