LAKE TOXAWAY BAM BURSTS. GREAT FLOOD OF WATER SWEPT INTO WESTERN SOUTH CAROL1NA-NO DEATHS REPORTED. Asheville. N C, August 13:?The Lake Toxawav dam, weakened by the recent floods, broke tonight, sending a great wall of water down the valley toward Western South Carolina. No lives so far have been reported lost, and warnings sent out from several cities are believed to have enabled most of the persons in the path of the llood to reach safety. The lake, an artificial body of water, was created in 1902 by Eastern capitalists. It covers 550 acres tc an average depth of thirty feet. The dam, an eighth of a mile Ion# and fifty feet high, was completely destroyed. The town of Lake Toxaway suffered only minor damage, though the lake was completely drained. The released waters tonight were rushing through the Toxaway river valley, a comparatively uniha'jitatec section, towards the Chuga river, ir South Carolina. Anderson, Wal< halla, Pickens and Seneca counties comprise the territory immediately threatened and warnings Acre tele phoned to all places that could b* * *1 A l_ . reached, it was esumaiea mai mt flood would reach Seneca by mid night. Persons familiar with the terri tory expressed the belief that th( waters would spread out over th< uninhabited country immediately south of Lake Toxaway and thui minimize the possibility of exten sive damage. The waters ultimately will flow in to the Savannah river through it various tributaries in Western Soutt Carolina., The lake was created in connectioi with a summer resort and had i shore railway line of 15 miles. Th< dam was constructed at a cost oi about $50,000. Toxaway is the third and larges of the lakes in Western North Caro lina mountains to go out since July 16, when heavy rains caused serioui *m iknf aA/tfi'nn UUVU3 iu uiab ocvvivu. .Several years ago cotton mill own ers whose plants were in the path o the waters should they escape, em ployed expert engineers to investi gate the safety of the dam. Follow ing the engineers' report, the struc ture which is built of earth an< stone, was strengthened. Four weeks ago, during the floo< period, fears for the dam's safet; were repeatedly expressed and then were several reports that it had col lapsed.
