Try the place that i i, igs to Eat" I i i r CURIOUS ICE COLUMN. The Transformation That Took Place In a Bottle of Water. A mother gave an empty cologne Dottle to her little boy to play with )n a cold day in winter. The bot,le was of colorless glass, six inches ligh and three inches across at the jottom. About midway it began to aper and was about half an inch in liameter at the top. Toward evenng the child filled the bottle with vater, inserted a cork and left it on i shelf in the pantry. In the morning a curious sight net the mother's eyes. The night lad been cold and the water was 'rozen &olid. Strange to 6ay, the lottle was not broken, but out of he top roee a column of ice four nches tall and exactly correspondng in diameter vrith the mouth of he bottle. The column of ice was ts round, straight and true as a lead )encil. To its summit the cork was rozen tight. This phenomenon vas viewed by the whole family. To iccount for it the following theory vas suggested. It is well known that by a law of lature all substances contract with old. Water is thus alTected until he freezing point is reached, when irystallization takes place. The parades of ice then arrange them:elves in such a manner that there s expansion instead of contraction n the entire bulk?that is to say, a :ubic foot of water will make more han a cubic foot of ice. Putting the case another way, a )ound of ice takes up more room han a pound of water; therefore, -? *? ii- -e :? I given LH11& UI IL*U 19 llguicr kUUli he same bulk of water. It is beause of this provision of nature hat ice floats instead of sinking, f the ice should sink to the bottom if a lake or stream new ice would :'orm at the top and sink in its turn, tnd so on until the entire body of rater became frozen. No summer leat could thaw it through, and it nay easily be imagined that the renits would be 'disastrous to mancind. The bottle of water which has >een described was on a shelf near i window and a little lower than the tflL It is probable that the cold irst attacked the water immediatey below the cork. The crystallized mrticles took the direction of least esistance and made their way uprard. As they emerged from the >ottle the particles immediately unler them nest became frozen and rere forced upward by expansion, rhis process was continued until he column of ice was formed.? iVashington Star. A Grim Deathbed Joke. 4 It was the 21st of April, 1821. Dr. I. P. Frank, the emiilent govirnor of the University hospital, Vienna, lay on his deathbed and cas expected every moment to pass iway. Once more the eight leading nedical men of the capital gathered ound his couch. All at once the >atient burst out laughing. "What is it that tickles your fancy?" his friends inquired. *A story has just come into my nind," was the reply. "On the batlefield of Wagram Lay a French eollier counting nis wounds. UaP he exclaimed. It takes eight bullet* o kill a French grenadier/ Geniemen, there are eight of you too." thus he spoke and expired in a fit )f laughter. An A*tont?htng Invention. Perhaps one of the most astonshing inventions on record was the levice of a Frenchman who suggested the laying down of huge suc:ion tubes from the coast out to carious points in the open sea. iVhen war broke out and hostile leets approached the coast, machinery on shore would be set to vork, the enemy's vessels would be caught by the irresistible suction, Irawn to the ends of the tubes and :here held firmly as prisoners. The A.'.l A A1. * _ J I me essential pari oi una iucu wmuu seemed td be missing was the machinery which was going to draw a 25,000 ton warship backward with ts engines going at full steam ihead. Marvels of Ship Construction. Each man-of-war is built upon oaper before a single plate of steel s forged. Not only are length and oreadth of a ship decided upon, but :he naval constructor can tell to an ounce how mueh wate^ she will disolace when her armor and guns are noun ted upon her, how many times her propellers will revolve in a: ninute with a given pressure* of steam, and how many tons of coal in hour must be consumed to attain i certain rate of speed.
