Pretty Good Law, j In Virginia two weeks ago Judge Holt imposed a fine of $75.00 upon Carl Taylor, a young white* man who plead guilty in the circuit court I to indictments charging him with * furnishing and delivering ardent j1 spirits to a minor. "From what the court can learn 1 of the case there is no evidence of j any criminal intent on the part of j the accused. The court would im- i pose a fine of seventy-five dollars on 1 the one indictment; and, in view of j the fact that he had plead guilty on j this indictment no action would be i ^ , > taken on the other at this time, but j 1 it would be retained on the docket|* and if there was no further viola- . j tion of law it would be dismissed; in J t case of further violation he would : i be prosecuted." r Young Taylor was depot and ex- ^ press agent at Decatur, Va, and it was not contended that he was traf- ( ricking in spirituous liquors. The t case is noteworthy from the fact * that he, as agent of an express t company, delivered to a minor' an ^ express package containing liquor. g He delivered the package to the t minor on an order signed by a man t of the Decatur community in whose * name the package had been received . by the express agent from a liquor ] house at Harrisonburg. c The above may seem to be pretty I strict law, but it is law, nevertheless, and if we mistake not, the provisions of the two-quart-a-month act ? provides against the delivery of ? packages containing liquor to any c except to whom the same is address- J ed and then only upon his or her signature indicating receipt in per- t son of the package. It will be well for express a{ ?nts in this section to I accept no gritten orders for the de- } livery of liquor whether presented v for a minor or adult. , j Turned Over the Coffin. g The Greenville News of Sunday prints the following story: A very unusual accident happened veaterday afternoon at the Amer ican Spinning company village, which ^ caused a great deal of excitement in that community. There were a num- J ber of people gathered at the funeral of John Briddell, well known j among the mill villagers. While the ^ services were being held over the ^ body,-a son the deceased, who it is said was intoxicated, got into an argument with another member of the family, and soon the two kegan to scuffle. Other members of the ^ family interposed and the fight became a melee. F In the scuffle and excitement the ^ coffin which contained the dead man y was turned over upon the floor. ^ Numbers of people rushed to the scene of the conflict. Sheriff Rector was phoned to come at once to the scene, and when he arrived the coffin was spilled upon the floor. He [ arrested the son, Munday, and lodg- t ed him in the county jail. The y " morgue was restored to its position f and the remainder of the service jj completed. \, \ ? i! NAMES MAGISTRATES. Gov. Manning Makes Several Appointments.
