CHARLESTON PUTTING HER HOUSE IN ORDER. EXTENSIVE PREPARATIONS UNDER WAY FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF SOUTHERN COM. CONGRESS. Charleston, November 30:? Elaborate and numerous are the entertainments and amusements Charleston is preparing for her visitors during the week of the Southern Commercial congress, December 13-17. Outstanding on the programme is the fleet of battleships and auxiliary craft to the number of 24, and all will be given over to visitors during the congress. Thousands of inlanders who seldom have an opportunity of seeing one of Uncle Sam's first class fighting ships or submarines will be .permitted to clamber over the vessels and roam at will on their decks during the week that they are anchored in Charleston harbor. And then there are the field and water sports, which will go on every day from almost sunrise to sunset and even at night, when the city and the battleship fleet will be lighted with the rays from hundreds of searchlights, making Charleston by night even more brilliant and scintillating in her holiday garb than Charleston by day. The field sports include every variety of athletics, football, basketball, races of all kinds and other games concocted es pecially for the occasion by an anie committee which has the matter in charge. Sightseeing trips for the visitors are being talked of, and both the street railways and the tracks of the terminal company will be requisitioned for this purpose. The plans for the amusement park are the most elaborate of anything ever staged in the South. There will be scores of free attractions, and the shows to which admittance is charged will be about the only amusement to which a visitor will be asked to pay. Visits to the battleships will be free, as will the field and water ? ? J r>!?Ufiv>Ain(f frina gs 8porta ttuu tuc sikiii9cciu? wi(a>i ?w well as open air dances and concerts. Items from Nesmlth. Nesmith, November 29:?Thanksgiving passed off very quietly here. Bird hunting seemed to be the only amusement. Messrs Marvin and Jack McCullough and Mrs L H McCullough of Cedar Swamp spent Thanksgiving day at the home of Mr William McCullough here. Miss Lena Haddock and little sister,Gertrude, spent the Thanksgiving holidays with their uncle, Mr Henry Haddock, of the Cedar Swamp section. Mr Maxie Hemingway, who has been employed by the A C L Co at St Stephens, has returned home. /- Mr Paul McElveen made a flying trip to the hustling town of Hemingway one day last week. Mesdames A F McElveen and Annie Brockinton were in Kingstree Saturday. About 8 orclock Thursday night a crowd of young people gathered at the home of Mr A F McElveen to go on a 'possum hunt. Mr and Mrs McElveen led the crowd down the road and through the woods to the swamp. Soon the dog "treed" and on reaching the spot they found something in a big hollow tree which proved to be a very large coon instead of a 'possum. After some time the old fellow was captured and with him the tired crowd returned to the road and wended their way homeward to welcome slumber. 1. Mrs V D Harper and little daughter, Louise, of Rome visited relatives here Saturday. Miss Muriel Chandler has been visiting her sister. Mrs V W Graham, near here.
