Miss Annie Ervin, who has been teaching at Carver's Bay, returned V. , home Saturday. Among those who attended the Carver's Bay commencement were: Miss Ethel McCullough and Messrs Willie Hemingway and Andie Brown of Hemingway, and Mrs G W Ervin and Mr R H Ervin, of this place. Around the stove of the cross roads grocery is the real court of last re? ' sort, for it finally over-rules all others. Chamberlain's Cough Rem^ edy has been brought before this court in almost every cross roads grocery in this country, and has al-1 ways received a favorable verdict, j It is in the country where a man ex-1 pects to receive full value for his money that this remedy is most apL predated. Obtainable everywhere. P In the United Kingdom there are f more than 1.700 building societies. S M ASKINS* STORE BURNED j I And Other Bnlldlngs Threatened : I by Fire at Lake City Monday. JJ Lake City, March 22:?Fire, which .1 about noon today broke out in the i| ?I store building: occupied by Maj S M jl Askins, completely destroyed his jl I store, containing a stock of general I merchandise, and for a while threat-'I ened destruction of a considerable!! portion of the business district. But. I for the favorable direction of the ! wind and the fact that the next!! building, that of the Smith-Williams I Co, on the side nearest the burning I building, was a solid brick wall, I the entire block of business I buildings fronting Acline avenue I would have been destroyed. I Several other store buildings on I Main street caught on the shingle I roofs from sparks carried by the I strong wind. From the first it was I clearly seen that the Askins building I could not be saved and all efforts I were exerted toward saving his I dwelling on the adjoining lot. By I the effective work of the fire de- I partment and the strong stream | that was constantly played on the t dwelling, it was not burned, although it caught once or twice. The value of the new gasoline fire engine purchased about the fi^st of the year has been demonstrated in the last two fires in preventing other buildings catching. Insurance to the amount of perhaps $3,000 was carried on the burned building. The origin of the fire is not known. Maj Askins' store was an old landmark on Railroad street, he being one of the pioneer merchants of Lake City. KERSHAW SHERIFF IN TROUBLE. Charged with Refusal to Enforce Liquor Laws?May Be Ousted. Columbia, March 17:?Governor Manning has issued a rule to show cause directed to Sheriff W W Huckabee, of Kershaw county, as to wha he should not bs removed from office. The rule is made returnable before the Governor at his office March 30 at 11 a. m. The charges against the Sheriff are his refusal to enforce the laws against liquor selling in the fnum nf T.ncmff. and his refusal to enforce the liquor laws at said place against a certain keeper of an alleged resort where drinking is carried on and liquor sold just outside the city limits of Camden. The Sheriff wrote the Governor that he has enforced the laws to the best of his ability. Says he is now confined to ( bed with grip, but hopes to be well enough to appear at the time appointed for the hearing. CoUlns-*Atalllsoift.
