ITALY'S DISASTER GREATEST OF KIND. ESTIMATES OF DEAD AND INJURED RUN AS HIGH AS FROM 90,000 to 100.000. Rome, January 15:?From 25,000 to 50,000 still remains the unofficial estimate of casualties in the earthquake that rocked Southern and Central Italy earlv Wednesday morn ing. The amount of damage cannot be determined from the meagre descriptions of the catastrophe that Kave reached Rome over hampered lines of communication. Such details as have come through leave no doubt that nearly one hundred towns and ft* villages have been utterly demolished or partly wrecked ar.d that the loss of life was great. Thousands of persons now have lain for nearly three days beneath crumbled buildings throughout the earthquake zone. Some are dead while others still are living. Many have been removed from the wreckage and brought to Rome hospitals for treatment or are being cared for in their home towns in temporary structures presided over by physicians and nurses rushed from the Capital and other cities in Italy. MESSINA ECLIPSED. William Marconi, who returned here today from Avezzano on board the train with King Victor Emmanf -' uel, said words could not describe the horrors he had witnessed. The town had been wholly levelled, he * i said, and residents tnat escaped K death were destitute. "King Victor Emmanuel told me," said Mr Marconi, "that he had visited the scenes of all earthquake disasters in Italy since he was a child, but this surpassed all, including Messina." The King said survivors of Avezzano were only between two and three per cent of its population, while in Messina one-th;rd escaped. Describing the damage in Avezzano Mr Marconi said: "Avezzano has ceased to exist. In f-4 Messina some buildings give one the impression that they are still intact, their facades having survived the w shock. Not so with Avezzano. No wall there remains erect. It seemed as though the town had been jrround to powder by some gigantic machine." * * SCR ANTON SKETCHES A Great Pleasure In Store?Local and Personal Mention. r l Scranton, January 19:?Prof M JH Anderson has announced that Dr KV v \ Howard Lee Jones, president of N Coker College, will lecture at the school auditorium here Friday night, January 29. J0HNS0NV1LLE GRADED SCHOOL \ Venters, January 18:?The holidays are over and we are back at work again. Everyone seems to have been benefited by the rest. We regret very much that our music teacher, Mrs A D Jones, has been unable to be with us since the holidays on account of her illness. We are very glad to say that she is improving. Mrs Beth Waddell Eaddy, a former teacher in our school, is taking her place. Times are right lively and many little features of amusement were given for the home-coming benefit of the college girls and hoys. Mrs A D Jones entertained one evening at rook and other games. Delightful music was rendered, and fruit and other refreshments were served. Miss Christine Newell entertained one evening in honor of Miss Gladys Poston and Mr DeLeon Poston. Carrom and rook were the principal games, but not the total amusement, for little heart candy was passed around and after the boys found the hearts that matched theirs they entered into an old-time "candy pulling",affording much amusement for everyone. Those participating in the evening's enjoyment were: Misses Gladys Poston, Cornelia Cockfield, Bertha Ard, Elizabeth Cannon,Bessie and Eadimae Huggins, Hennie and Christine Neweli and Messrs Emerson and Fairy Ard, Ottis and Ned Huggins, Davis Newell, Cole Cannon and Butterfield Newell.
