Mr S C Green,of the University of' South Carolina, spent the week-end at home with his parents. Mr and Mrs V G Arnette and Prof H H Brown of Cades visited relatives and friends in town Sunday. Mrs \V H Woods of Florence is spending a while with her sister, Mrs H Van Epps. Among the many new residences I now being erected are: The hand-) some dwelling of Mrs 0 E Singletary, in North Main street; a large and coflifortable home on Dunham avenue belonging to Mr ? Yarbor ough; the neat and modern cottage of Mr W C Kelley,formerly of Marion, under construction in West Thomas street and the home of Mr W E Spivey in Rutledge Park. Besides these residences are several others almost completed. The Atlantic Coast Line freight depot has been enlarged quite recently and a cotton platform of about 300 feet in length is being constructed; these improvements, together with the widening of the space between the three tracks at the station and the leveling of the yards, have made the local station ' rtH want i an f VlO UIJC Ui U1C UIVOV auiaviiTv vr*. w^.%/ line. That the Yuletide is approaching is evidenced by the shrill siren whistles?always a forerunner of Santa Claus, indulged in by the young members of our families?the beautiful displays in the shop windows and the revival of embroidery clubs, etc; but by far the most potent sign is the anticipation of the school children for the two weeks' recess. Thanksgiving day, tomorrow, will lie celebrated in the usual manner j here. Not that we have any destitute in our community, hut there are so many, many orphanages and homes within loO miles of us where any small remembrance would be appreciated. In this connection, Mr Editor, suppose we, through your worthy paper, get up a contribution for a certain home or orphanage for Christmas, where funds are most seriously needed,and where any gift is more than appreciated. Cades, November 26:?The Bank of Cades was burglarized last week, the burglar or burglars entering at j at the front of the building bv break-: ing a large plate glass window. An ) attempt was made to get into the steel vault, but the attack was a failure. Some of the ornamental caps or knobs on the hinges of the door were loosened and the walls of | the vault battered up a little. Beyond this there was no loss or damage sustained by the bank. Mr J R Hastlden spent Sunday with relatives at Lake City. Mr Will Webber, of the Hebron i neighborhood, was noted in our! midst one day last week. Mr N F Knight went to Lake City Tuesday on business. White Oak, November 26:?A delightful supper was given at the home of Mr R E Ward Friday evening, the purpose being to raise funds j for the White Oak School Improve-; ment association. The menu con- j sisted of barbecue, chicken, turkey, rice, biscuits, pickles, oysters, coffee, cakes and pies and chocolate. Several cakes were sold at auction, onrj tKio vnnntr folk enioved cake-1 walking for several. The fruit stand was quite beautiful. The affair was very much enjoyed, although the crowd was small.
