THURSDAY. OCT. 30. 1913 The city of Milwaukee has parsed an ordinance prohibiting gossip. If the law be enforced an exodus of the women is highly probable. Some of former Senator John L McLaurin's friends say that the man who beats McLaurin will l?e the next Governor. A slightly more accurate forecast might l>e, "the man who is the next Governor will beat McLaurin and several other 'also Kins'." _____ Speaking of a theatrical attraction presented in Columbia last week the Columbia correspondent of the News and Courier quotes Governor Blease as saying: "Each person played their part very cleverly." His Excellency should brush up a bit on ft his grammar or get his press agent to edit his bright remarks. The Fair edition of the Columbia State last Sunday well maintained that newspaper's high standard of excellence. The paper contained eighty-four pages and to print the , edition of thirty thousand required eighteen tons of white paper. Think of it! flight nunarea aouars worm of paper to print one issue! Wonder how many thousands of dollars advertising space the newspapers of South Carolina contribute every year to the State Fair? Every county fair pays for the newspaper publicity it receives, why should the big State Fair get this service free? It's all right for the Fair, of course; but how about the newspapers? The Columbia Record issued its first Sunday paper last Sunday morning. It was a mammoth edition of 116 pages?one of the biggest newspapers ever issued in South Carolina. The Record has made wonderful strides in progress within the past few years and now ranks as one of the leading afternoon papers of the South. Last Sunday's issue represents not only a vast expenditure of money, talent and energy but also a magnificent mechanical plant, without which such a journalistic feat could not have Invn accomplished. W e are arranging to get out a 1 handsome Christmas edition of The i Ilecord, which will lie issued about j( December 1. J lie paper will bej al?)Ut double the size of the usual |] issue ?>f The Record, with beautiful < y. -. . ? U'-i-. v.- S-4rfUt- ^ - M 'I v : lithographed covers and a variety j ( ' of holiday illustrations and reading matter. We would like for every < business firm in Kingstree to adver- i tise in this issue if only in a small 1 space, and we hope to have Lake ' r> 1?:n? 1 Uiy, V^aues, vjreeijrvme aiiu iuv thriving municipalities of Heming- , way and Johnsonville also repre- sented. As the work of getting out i this paper will be done all at home ^ in our office,it. will require consider- ' able time to do it justice, therefore we ask all who want advertising j space in it kindly to let us know as i soon as practicable. The issue will 1 go into about 2,000 homes of the 1 best people on earth and to say that j it will be an excellent advertising , Jr.. ? ?Ka a rvf Cliru>f*. ? meuiuui nuuiu iTc a uuin v* o rogation. i < A bit of horse play indulged in by 1 a spectator in the court room at An- ' derson last week imperiled the life ! of everyone present and especially jeopardized the lives of Judge H : F Rice and the deputy Sheriff who was walking down the aisle with the Judge on the way to din- \ ner at the noon recess. The "smart i Alec," doubtless desiring to advise 1 the natives that he was in town and , on familiar terms with the acting j Sheriff, playfully tapped that official over the pistol pocket with a stick, \ causing the officer'^ weapon to ex- ? plode and thereby precipitating a ] scene of excitement that can readi- 1 ly l>e imagined. Fortunately that j divinity supposed to wait upon fools i and children seems to have been * "on the job" and no one in the court-room was killed or maimed by ^ the missile exploded by the deadly ^ weapon We concur most heartily t with the oral opinion of his Honor j that"the man acted very foolishly." T ====== ( Florence's Big Fair. ( Florence proposes to have on No- * vember 12, 13 and 14 the^biggest j fair that has ever been held in this section of the State, and promises that it shall not be inferior in attend- f ance or in exhibits to the average c State Fair, if not better. Ever}' one remembers how well ( Florence always has entertained her f visitors at the old J^abor day cele- v brat'ons and at every event of im- * portance she has given, and the public is assured that this fair will be the crowning event in her record of entertainment. ^ There is to be an airship there for T all three davs guaranteeing two as- r ' i .1. ... !. . .x 5 cents uany unless mere is u storm, and a carnival and lots of free street attractions for the amusement of 1 the visitors, including a hand of i music, a parade and fireworks and * many other attractions. The tested and proven value of Scott's Emulsion is recognized by the greatest specialists because its medical nourishment assimilates quickly to build healthy tissue; aids in the development of active, life-sustaining blood corpuscles; strengthens the lungs and builds physical force without reaction.
