I read with a great deal of inter est the article of August 14, over the signature of some of the citizens of Lake City. 1 do not for one moment uphold the accused. If the charges are true, and I presume they are, the guilty needs to be punished, but I do warn those would-be morally righteous citizens to be consistent and not strain at gnats, yet swallow camels. It is hard to understand why those citizens, whose sense of morality and righteousness is so keen that they are grossly offended by the acts of one R H King, who involves only himself and one or two others, yet they pass by unnoticed another man who conducts a restaurant, and in open defiance to the laws of both town and State runs, as it were, an open bar. He does not choose his customer, but sells to one and all, day and night, the infernal stuff that has wrecked more homes than any other one thing on God's green earth. Good moral citizens, I ask you where is your sense of morality, when it comes to selling whiskey? You have none. You need not plead ignorance of this, for I don't believe there is a man in Lake City, who is not aware that he sells whiskey. He no longer hides it, but places It out on the shelves in his place of business. Good moral Mayor and righteous minister, why stand ye idle with folded arms and do nothing? Why do you not join together and stop it? Ye lover of homes and righteousness, I call upon you to rise up as one man and drive this whiskey seller out of your town. Again, good moral citizen, I ask you how you voted on the 19th? Some for liquor, of course. You did not think of home, that boy of yours or that poor wife and children that must bear the brunt and abuse of a drunken man made possible by your vote and by your consent. I ask you, is that a moral question? Again, I say, do not strain at gnats and swallow camels. When we countrymen go to town we do not feel the effects of R H King's acts, but, on the other hand, we do feel and see what the other man does. I call upon you, good citizens, for the sake of humanity, for the sake of your town, our country boys, and last, for God's ! sake, to do something.
