^ MULDER MOST FOUL. John Q Lewis Slain at His Home Near Chester. Chester, April 25:?John Q Lewis, an old Confederate soldier, was murdered at his home, three miles west, of Cornweli.in this county, last night, the motive evident!v beincr robberv. as a watch and pistol belonging to the deceased were missing. This morning the murder was discovered by James Dove, a farm hand, when he went to the house to perform morning chores, and the alarm was spread hurriedly through the neighborhood. Sheriff Colvin and deputies arrived on the scene early, but a vigorous search has not resulted in the apprehension of the assassin. It was at first thought that it might have been a case of suicide, but the finding of two wounds, one j in the side and the other in the back discounted this theory and the Coroner's jury brought in a verdict of j death at the hands of some unknown party. However, it was necessary to continue the inquest on account a scarcity of testimony. Mr Lewis lived alone, at some distance from the nearest neighbor and as he was a man of some means it is the general opinion that he was murdered for money that he was supposed to have or. the premises. Most 01 ms money, nuwever, ?aa m mc bank at Chester, and the sum of forty dollars, which was in the house, was not found by by the murderers. ONE ON HIS EXCELLENCY. Yeggman Walked Out of Governor's Office, Escaping Officers. Columbia, April 26: ? While a United States marshal was waiting in the outer office with a warrant for his arrest, James Johnson, alias "Portland Ned", who was yesterday N, prroled by the Governor, walked out of the inner office and vanished. The Governor had the prisoner i Li e *i? anil urouguu 1IU1I1 UlC IJCuacimaij anu he was waiting in his inner office while the Governor was communicating with the Federal authorities. The Governor stepped out to the outer office, and while he was away "Portland Ned" politely walked out of the private office and vanished.. I This man served a seven-year sentence in the Federal prison for dynamiting a postoffice safe at Enoree, in Spartanburg county, and was sentenced to the State prison tor ten years for the same offense. Being paroled yesterday after noon, a warrant for blowing a postoffice safe at Plymouth,N C, in 1898 was taken out before Commissioner Sloan and placed in the hands of Deputy Marshal Senn. The latter was waiting in the Governor's outer office to serve the warrant when the prisoner, taking advantage of the Goyernor's absence from his inner office, walked out and disappeared. SOUTH CAROLINA GIRL Resents Criticism of Her Native State by Outside People. Editor County Record:? Why is our State ridiculed? Why do the citizens of our sister States laugh, or at least smile, when I tell them I'm a South Carolinian? Why do the citizens of Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia speak of her in sneering terms? What's the trouble with our Governor? Just the other j day I glanced over a paper printed in Oxford, N C, comparing our people, who put Cole L Blease in office, with a crowd in Virginia who are trying to erect a monument at the graves of the Aliens. Friends, doesn't it make your blood boil, as it were, j to hear our State thus "raked over ! the coals"? To hear people speak of South Carolina?the best State in the Union?as the "Blease State"? Everybody whom I tell I am a South Carolinian has a remark toj make about her politics, her Govern- j or and her Senator. I think it's time for our citizens to wake up, open j their eyes and so enforce our laws that one will feel it an honor to be from the old Palmetto State, and not lower our heads when told that Ben Tillman and Cole L Blease are rascals. Friends, the truth stings, i doesn't it? Let's be up and doing with God's v^in and make our State what His ? -. all-wise providence intended it to be, A S C Girl in N C. Albemarle, N C, April 22.
