XXX Larkin Reid, a white man 60 years old, was run down and instantly killed by a train on the C & G division of the Southern railway at Williamston Tuesday afternoon. XXX Bv order of Governor Blease, Chief State Constable Kibler of Columbia and his local assistants raided a socalled social club at Lexington Tuesday and captured more than $500 worth of whiskey and beer. XXX The cotton crop for 1912 is estimated at 13,820,000 bales, as announced by the United States Department of Agriculture. This is the second largest crop ever produced and will probably rank as the most valuable on record. XXX Luther McBee, a well-to-do farmer of Greenville county, was mortally wounded by Dock Knight, who struck him two blows on the head with an axe Saturday afternoon. The two men were drinking and quarreled and fought. XXX Three Kershaw county convicts, two of them serving life sentences and the third a twenty year term, overpowered a penitentiary guard Wednesday of last week and mad^ their escape. Alonzo McDean and Hiram Lykes are the life term prisoners and Capers Rembert the twenty-year convict. XXX R A Richey, white, serving a ten year sentence in the State penitentiary for rape, was paroled last week by Governor Blease on condition that he give a $5,000 bond and report to the Governor November 23, 1913,for such action as the Governor may then deem wise. Richey, a wealthy farmer of Abbeville county, was convicted of rape in 1910, his victim being a white girl under 14 1 j 1. years OlO, living in ivicncjr a nuuit; under his protection. XXX The engagement of Miss Helen Gould,of New York city, to Finley J Shepard. of St Louis, has been announced. Miss Gould is the daughter of the late Jay Gould. She is 44 years of age and her fiance 45 years old. Miss Gould is worth $30,000,000 and much of her money has been spent in relieving the condition of the poorer classes. During the Spanish-American war she gave several hundred thousand dollars, and much of her time besides, for the relief of the sick and wounded soldiers. XXX Secretary of the Treasury McVeagh is now arranging for the printing of the new form of paper money to be issued by the Govern ment. The new currency, which is designed to supplant the old, will be only two-thirds the size, its dimensions being six by two and onehalf inches. The new notes will have this peculiarity: all notes will have the same design on the back. This applies to treasury notes, coin certificates and bank notes.
