; KINGSTREE HIGH SCHOOL. ,< ? ?? ????? ? - ? ? I All patrons and friends of the 1 Kingstree school are invited to attend our Christmas exercises, to be held Friday, December 20, at 10. j o'clock. For this occasion every classroom will put on holiday attire. | First and second prizes of $3.00 and i $1.50, respectively, are offered for j the rooms most tastefully attired, i, In order to reach a decision in this '. * matter, every visitor will be allowed a vote, the votes will be collected and counted and the two rooms receiving the greatest number of votes wiil be awarded the prizes. This plan was formulated at the monthly meeting of the school faculty held December 8. It may interest the patrons to know that these meetings are held on the last Thursday of every school month, and all the 4 teachers attend regularly. Matters relating to the best interests of the pupils are discussed and plans formed to increase the efficiency of the work. We are glad to note the large attendance at chapel exercises this week. The smallpox scare is dead All the children have been vaccinated, the quarantine has been raised from every house but one, and the usual number of happy faces is seen in all the class rooms. Its members continue to render very effective programmes. We believe that if this society continues its good work it will soon become one of the most prominent literary societies in the State. The school work has been a source of pleasure to pupils and teachers as well for the past term. Prof Mason, of Clemson college, has been with us for the past week. The boys of the school, under the supervision of Professors Mitchell and Mason, are laying the foundation for our new dairy. Last Thurs- , day the dairy class gave a cream separating and butter making dem- ! - v onstration. We had several visitors wfth us, who, as well as the teachers ; and pupils, took great interest in the work. We have prepared for our butter contest to be on Friday, which j we Know win oe a Kreat step ui tut: general improvement of our com- ! munity in this line of work. ! Although sickness prevented the ' Beulah Buck quartette from being ' with us on Saturday night, Novem- 1 ber 30, we had several selections of ( music by the music class and teach- ' er. Then the crowd went up-stairs, ( where they were served with supper, 1 cakes and fruit. A neat little sum 1 was realized?something over $40. J A half acre of ground has been 1 enclosed with wire fencing. A part ( of thiswill be usedfor individual plots for each member of the botany class. These plots are 24 by 10 feet each. The remainder will be used for reg- ! ular gardening and experimental ; work. Five hundred choice straw- j berry plants have already been plant- j ed. Lettuce and onion seeds will be i planted this week. The flower garden has been work- ! ed up in fine condition. We have i several hundred bulbs planted, some sweet peas and other small flowers. J Other plants will be added quite soon. ?. r i y The campus has been fenced in with i substantial wire fence. Miss Stubbs las charge of the gardening?both flower and vegetable. Watch Union grow! Those who desire to pay their taxes through the mail would expedite matters by dropping the Treasurer a postal asking for the amount of their tax,so as to avoid sending the wrong amount, also stating the township or townships (if property is owned in more than one) and if possible give school district where property is located; also state whether poll or road tax, or both, are wanted, \fter paving taxes examine your re:eipts ana see if all your property, is jovered; if not, see about it at once.
