Sumter, October 7:?Hardy Johnson, colored, who was in custody to be tried at the term of court now in session, on the charge of housebreaking and larceny, managed to escape from the Sumter hospital Sunday morning by means of a very clever ruse. He poured carbolic acid on his hands and clothes Saturday night and deceived the officers into thinking that he had drunk the poison. He was taken from the jail to the hospital for treatment. Here it was thought that he could not possibly live and his guard was removed. Sunday morning early he managed to slip from the hospital and has not been caught yet.
