Editor County Record:? A good deal of my life has bee id spent on the historic Black river an jd in its swamp, some places dark an ' dismal, others romantic and lovely : again, spots weird and lonely, su: rounded by 'the stillness of deatl Sometimes I think one-half of m life has been passed in that oJ C,' swamp, but none of it to my regre _ It has been a faithful old past tirr j friend and. as I often say to m friends, my only love. | I have a loving daughter living a Florence, who wants me to live wit 1 ' her and her family. Her home is ^ 1 dear place to rne and I would I pj | there today if I could take Blac river and the good, true friends * am so much attached to here, wit me. I have rafted ton timber < > Georgetown and flat-boated rosi ? anditurp-mtine barrels by the thoi ^ 1 sand. I began cutting ton timber i 11856. I Think of such generosity now! Wh would give a pine tree, be it ever s small, and lend a four-mule team 1 ~~ j a poor wanderer without home or Si place to lay his head, possessing onl the coarse clothes on his back? Wh] j to imagine such magnanimity nov ! a-days would be absurd. Ah, the are most all gone whence there is n returning. Why should I not love Black ri\ er, along whose banks lived thos ! lived those dear friends, whos ! house was a home to poor Conrac where he always had a chair at th d1 table? Dear old Pete Epps woul ' say to me, "Conrad, the dogs are a ; ways glad whenyou come." as I ai fond of sweet potatoes and a grei pile of potato scraps would be aroun | my plate after eating.
