French Navy Loses Finest Battle Ship?400 Killed and Wounded. < Toulon, France, September 25:? J Between 350 and 400 officers and 1 men were killed today when the battleship Liberte was torn apart and totally destroyed by an explosion of I her magazines. ' The battleship Republique was badly damaged and the battleships ' Democratic and Verite also suffered severely from the masses of twisted j iron and armor plate that were I hurled upon their decks. This is the greatest disaster that has ever fallen upon the French i navy and in magnitude is almost , without precedent in the annals of , the world's fighting ships. The grief ( which prostrates the fleet and nation , is made more intense by the memory of the recent review here, a notable j display of France's naval greatness, ^ in which the doomed ship was one of . the finest figures. ^ It is now considered almost estab- ^ lished that the disaster was due to ^ the deflagration of "B" powder, as J. in the case of the Iena. Towards 5 j a. m. the watch perceived a dense { smoke coming from the forepart of ^ the ship. He reported this to the officers, who promptly ordered that the vessel be flooded. Some idea of the violence of the ( explosion may be had from the fact that the officer commanding the { gunnery schoolship Foudre.anchored ? three kilometres (1.8(5 miles) from ^ the Libcrte was killed on his own 1 .... I quarter deck by a fragment of sneii * hurled from the Liberte and two tailors beside him were wounded. 1 There was a roll call of the remnant of the crew of the Liberte on board the battleship Suffern tonight. ' The scene was pitiful, as many of ( the men were injured and most of | them were in tears. I ^ _ i "I have a world of confidence in (1 Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, for I r have used it with perfect success," ( writes Mrs M I Basford, Poolesville, i Md. For sale by all dealers. ADMIRES PASTOR RUSSELL'S BOOK. "Th? Dlvfn* Plan of the Agaa." Every One Should Read It Atlanta Constitution says?"This tronderful book makes no assertions that are not well sustained by the Scriptures. It Is built up stone by stone, and upon every stone Is the text, and' It becomes a pyramid of God's lore, and mercy, and wisdom. There Is nothing In the Bible that the Author denies or doubts, but there are many texts that he throws a flood of Light upon that seems to uncover their meaning." It Comforts the Bereaved. "Bill Arp" says?"It Is Impossible to read this book without loving the writer and pondering his wonderful solution of the great mysteries that hare troubled us all our lives. There Is hardly a family to be found that has not lost 6ome loved one who died outside the church?outside the plan of salvation, and. All cards of thanks, for any purpose whatsoever, a-e charged for at the rate of one cent a word. It would save us a good deal of trouble and embarrassment if you would just count the words and send the money along with your "copy," as it hardly pays us to keep books on these little items.
