"In men whom men condemn as ill, I find so much of goodness still; In men whom men pronounce divine, I find so much of sin and blot? I hesitate to draw the line Between the two?where God has not" KINGSTREE?THE GATEWAY TO OPPORTUNITY. THURSDAY. MAY 25. 1911. The Case of Hasty. No wonder good people at times become desperate and take tbe law into their own hands. Hero we have turned loose upon society a double murderer?a red-handed miscreant who shot down two guests at his own hotel. And why? Because, forsooth, they dared to remonstrate with their host for trying to force his way into the l>edroom of one of the women of their party. Armed to the teeth, the young ruffian was not content to kill the man he* claimed was al?out to assault him,lmt having despatched .the first victim, he coolly turned and shot to death another man who was standing still near by, taking no part in the encounter, the evidence showed. Now comes the Solicitor for that % circuit ami says that lie will not attempt to bring this man to" trial for the second murder l>ecause the witnesses are scattered and cannot l>e located now. What a travesty on law and justice that such things are possible in t a civilized country! The man, George H;isty, who in the twinkling J of an eye hurled into eternity two of! his fellow beings?unarmed guests J of his hotel?was given a full and unconditional pardon by Governor Blease a few days ago, after having served less than five years of a lifetime sentence.. Suppose it had !>een your brothers or sons he ruthlessly slew. Does it le^Sfen the enormity of the crime that the victims of his deadly pistol were poor player-folk, strangers in a strange country, and without friends or influence? Looks Like Persecution. A revenue officer paid the town a visit Saturday and mulcted a nunil?er of our merchants for revenue license for selling some kind of beverage that he claimed contained a higher percentage of alcohol than the law allows. The men who sold the cider were entirely innocent of wrong intention, we understand, as they were assured by the dealer who sold them the ft ^ ^ stuff that it was non-alcoholic, or, at least, that it eaine within the requirements of the law. We understand that the inspec- , I tor's haul amounted to live or J six hundred dollars in town, l>e- ^ sides what he picked up in the ? country, in what seems almost like ^ legalized robbery. Only a short while ago one of these r collectors gathered in a hundred or two dollars from the local druggists ^ for having a few ounces of al- g cohol in their stores. The revenue officers are certainly good collectors. E ===== 8 The most reliable maxims of sue- ^ . ,? 0 cess in war are Sir Hiram s. And vet some people sav that there ... * k is nothing 111 a name. . n We most heartily endorse the n "clean-up day'' movement. Ia?t p everybody make it a personal v matter. .Sweep away the trash from s your own door, then you will l?e in a position to urge it upon your neighbor. f - ( A press agent is sometimes a d lioomerang. District Court for South Carolina, J while quite in keeping with the11, magnanimous and far-sighted pol-J icy of President Taft, is none ^ the less appreciated by the white I Democrat^ of South Carolina. i t Sueli an appointment is doubly j5 gratifying, inasmuch as it gives us a white Democrat to till this S high and honorable office, and, g withal, a man for a place requiring signal ability and deep t: 1< erudition whose peculiar fitness therefor is conceded to l?e equal to that of any one in the Shite. y P Taken all in all, the appoint- e! ment of Mr Smith is a happy selection indeed. a C oCitation Notice?Mrs Mary G Reg- ister.
