v. A PLEA FOR GOOD ROADS. 1 i Road Engineer Eaddy Gives Some Timely Advice and Suggestions, j Editor County Record: ? i I am glad to announce, by the co- ! operation of Capt John A Kelley.the < president of the Good Roads Con- i j'*ntion for Williamsburg" county, that an expert road builder will be 1 here about the first of April to assist i' me in building the best sand-clay j 1 roads known to the Government il experts. At the close of th's work we hope to have a Good Roads convention at which addresses will be made, fully explaining the work that . has been done. Definite notice will , be given later as to the exact day of i the meeting. < And allow me to say that since 1 commencing my work, and coming in touch with the real sentiment ex- , isting- in favor of good roads, that j our county is now ready for busi- 1 ness. Why, I have my first business man to meet yet who is not ready to ] ; put his shoulder to the wheel and j support our road-fund, each in his ! respective section, in order to facili- ( tate the good work, from a stand- ^ point of good investment! I do wish that others would sit down and count the cost of txrd roads and compare in detail with what we are losing by being compelled to take only a halfload in ihe same time in which we ' should move twice the amount. Let 's see: If by taking 1,500 pounds as a load on a bad road for a day's pull that is worth?say $3.00? and ; it actually cost seventy-five cents to feed the two mules and the same for a driver, there will be left a net profit of $1.50 for the day's work. Now, on good roads 3,000 pounds is . not an overload, therefore, with the same expense of $1.50, we have not only landed two days' work in one, but at the same cost, thus leaving for our profit $4.50,or three times as much, which really means two hundred per cent in favor of good roads. Mr Editor, we complain of how hard it is to even pay even seven per cent simple interest upon unavoidable accounts, and yet sleep over the fact that we are paying upon avoidable accounts two hundred . per cent, and that at tie rate of interest compounded upon us at every stump, mud-hole and sand-bed wearing and tearing vehicle, driver and team. Good folks.let's engage the enemy at short range and ourselves possess the method that will give to every individual a right to enjoy all together this magnanimous rate of compound interest converted into our profit simply by getting busy and shoving the good roads movement along, from house to house throughout our country, and thus get ready for about the first of April, when we will have this expert, not only to tell us about all these advantages, but ' will demonstrate the practical as ' well as the theoretical part in con- ' structing for Williamsburg three 1 sections of clay sand road that will speak for itself as an object lesson. Fellow citizens, there is something for us to gain if we will but manifest sufficient interest to make the occasion a brilliant success by taking an active part in visiting the work personally. Seeing is believing to most people, therefore, that we might believe, come and see. Re- ( . member that strength is never want/? ing where accord and amity are found, most especially where faith is < converted into sight, and for this ! rpnsnn T think best to have demon stration made where people naturally pass most to see; and also be- i cause Kingstree is making such ac- j tive strides, by way of supplement to eliminate any friction that might ^ arise for lack of means to offset j concentrations of township funds in ' . the township concurrent to the expense of this job. See about supplement in your ^Sections, if you are . with us, and I suggest that we have < a call meeting in each township and j let us see reports at our next Good ? Roads meeting here. I would be so ( glad to see every township represented along this line, then we would ( naturally be able to decide which section needs immediate attention worst. Now, we .all know that if we ever get roads or anything else in this life, we must pay the price, j and I think that the section which ' needs the chainganp worst will very clearly settle the question in the way of supplement. I am doing my best to construct thoroughfare routes throughout our county first, and the foregoing plan will also indicate the direction for these roads n reaching your place. Please com? at me with pood adrice as to some better plan if you \now it. and 1 promise that 1 will be jlad to consider it carefully and delight in veur hearty co-operation. J mo M Eaddv, Road Engineer. g.,rr tn romitli! nnr nx<im ?>?. vw friends that all notices relating to money - making enterprises, for church, school or any other cause, are charged for as advertising at une cent a word. All cards of thanks, for any purpose whatsoever, are charged for at the rate of one cent a word. It would save us a crood deal of trouble and embarrassment if you would just count the words and send the money along with your "copy," as it hardly pays us to keep books on these little items. Yet in the aggregate they mean a considerable loss to the paper if not collected, and they are so easily overlooked. tf KINGSTREE HIGH SCHOOL NOTES. ?-? ?-? ? ?
