Feb- | ruary 3:?Winthrop is doing a great deal for the improvement of the ru- : 1 ral schools of the State. Last Satur- j day. January 2S, the teachers of e York county met here and organized ', a county teachers' association. An 1 interesting programme was rendered ! 1 m/unluiH! tVl.i familtv ATi?? ^ uy IllCIIIWtO V'A. W 11V ? , ^ Withers, principal of the practice 1 school at Winthrop, presented a ( reading lesson to the children of the first grade; Dr Lois M Boyd talked < on "Hygiene in the School"; Profes- 1 sor Niven, "Agriculture in the; School"; Miss Leila A Russel, a , former teacher at Winthrop who is now supervisor of York county schools, gave a talk on her experience in visiting the country schools. She j is now working out an ideal pro-' gramme for the country school. This has never been satisfactorily done on account of the great number of classes which necessarily exist in an ungraded school where the children represent all the grades, from the first up to the seventh or eighth. The college issues bulletins on sewing,? rt. hygiene and agriculture, ' ? ?-?Lrt .vktom^/1 kt? m. &HU lllfi-t Illcl\ Of i>tji.aiiivLvi u(i ivquest from any teacher. In these bulletin.- courses are planned for the different grades and they would be j of value to anyone contemplating the introduction of any of these subjects into a school, in many of the county papers announcements have been made by the Rural School Improvement Association of Winthrop College offering a picture costing $15 to the boy or girl who writes the best essay on "The Five Pictures I < Would Choose for a School, and ' Why." How many are trying for it? J Hedge cuttings and bulbs also are ' sent out for school purposes free of * charge. ' J A good, thorough course in agri- < <Milture is reauirea at Winthrop. | j ^ The girls are taught gardening. I J grafting and budding, and are given * practical work in a propagation ) house under the direction of Profes- J sor L A Niven.a well-trained and ex- { perienced instructor. The following ? are some of the questions given to ? the agriculture class on a written * test: "What is the average length of J the fiber of upland cotton and of sea jsland cotton? What is meant by 'rotation of crops' and 'cover crops'? h Give their value. What is meant by b an 8-3-5 fertilizer? Give details of n the onlv method by which a farmer P Q may determine just what fertilizer t| his soil needs to grow a certain c crop." One lesson of importance t! gained from the study of agricul- r' ture is the dignity of labor. Of the ^ 702 students here 243 are farmers' _ d daughters. d We have had several interesting a entertainments within the past two f ! r weeks. Miss Dorothy Lethbridge, J ^ the young English pianist, who is J n now making a, tour of the United :c Stat?s, was here last Monday even-,a ing. She br ?ught her piano and pre- a sented her programme in a marvel ous manner. Miss Lethbridge ranks' with the greatest male pianists or J Europe. ! ^ The English Grand company play- i ed here Saturdav niyht. *? The event of deepest interest to t all concerned was that which always jj comes with the close of the first j term, the tragedy in four acts: "I. Cram. II. Exam. III. Flunk. L IV. Trunk:** The first three acts ha-v been pre-L sented and rerhaps the fourth will' ^ soon appear. , We are now having a series of ( Bible lessons <-n "The Life of Christ" j i in the afternoons from 4:45 to 6:00 o'clock. This course is being given1 by Miss Cutler, a traveling Bible * teacher connected with the Young c Women's Christian Association.
