Kingstree H A Pleasant Visitation. Saturday afternoon our grimy nd prosaic workshop was transormed for the nonce into an enhanted scene of grace and beauty nd loveliness. The charm that rrought this wondrous change was tot the fairy wand of enchantment,1 iut the presence of a bevy of bright, j retty and attractive young lady chool-teachers, before whose visitaion, the cares that infest us atevenng were dispelled as the mists of eary morn vanish at the touch of rosyingered dawn. The sight of these resh and enthusiastic young"schoolna'ams" caused a feeling of poiglant regret for our vanished youth ind a vain longing, "Turn backward," 0 Time, in thy flight and nake me a school-boy again just to j luaff the Pierian waters from the I fount of knowlege the chalice prof?red by hands so fair. C GENERAL ASSEM- , BLY'S FIRST WEEK; ; NOT MARKED BY SPECIAL INCI- ' DENT--WILLIAMSBURG DELEGATION READY FOR WORK. i The Capitol, Columbia, January 16: ?The first week of the General Assembly was not marked by anything of extraordinary interest or importance. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives met promptly at the appointed hour and were soon organized and ready for business. In the Senate Lieut-Gov ernor McLeod is presiding and Mr M M Mann of St Matthews is clerk. Dr Stokes is reading clerk and Rev A E Holler was elected chaplain, defeating his opponent by a very flattering vote. Both Dr Stokes and Mr Holler are well known in Williamsburg. The House organized by electing Hon M L Smith of Camden, Kershaw county, speaker; Jas A Hoyt of Columbia, clerk; R E Carwile of Columbia, journal clerk, and Rev R N Pratt, chaplain. The Williamsburg delegation an-, swered to the roll-cali in both branchfr* o nnmKor i\"f C5 cilUt rtCiC a^O'^UVU WU u nuuivvi WA important committees, as follows: Mr Kellahan?Ways and Means committee. This appointment is an enviable one and is always accepted with a distinct appreciation. It is considered more than a mere compliment and we congratulate both our county and Mr Kellahan. Mr B B Chandler was placed on i Agriculture, Education and Public Schools. Mr Chandler is peculiarly ; fitted for these places of work and i Us friends may expect good results, i He has started out full of vim and energy. j Mr J C Graham finds himself in1 equally as pk a ant places and is going at things with that quiet determination which always brings things to pass. His appointments are: Commerce and Manufactures, Public Buildings,Penitentiary and Military. The Senator received the following committee appointments, which will furnish him ample opportunities to acquaint himself fully with legislation and how laws are made and in turn to assist along important lines. Here are his appointments: Education, Drainage and Immigration, Fish, Game and Forestry, Engrossed Bills, Enrolled Bills, Printing, Public Library. Our delegation seems to be workinnr hormnninmlu tnapthpr.mutuallv assisting one another and offering suggestions for Williamsburg's benefit. The second week will begin work j in earnest^and everything seems to settling down, getting ready for what is expected to follow. Unless the programme be changed the inauguration of the new Governor will take place to-morrow (Tuesday) with the usual ceremonies attendant upon these events. Epps. i Error Corrected. In our reports of the annual meetings of the three leading banks of the county last week, a regrettable, err or was made in the figures show- j ing the condition of the Bank of Kingstree. Our report gave the! amount of surplus as $15,000, when j the surplus and undivided profits shoul d have been $25,340. The de- j posits given as $173,954.86 should j have been $175,271. We make this correction cheerfully and will-j ingly, at the same time apologizing to the Bank of Kingstree for the injustice done it by giving it no credit for the entire net earnings of its most prosperous year. A NEWSY LET Its FROM LAKE CITY. A PROSPEROUS BANK-SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. S. T. GODWINNEW YEAR BRINGS CHANGES. He remained here until Wednesday in attendance upon the quarterly conference of the church. This was the first conference of the year. Mr J J Snow was in town last Thursday from Rome. v We are glad to announce that Mrs R F Jovner, who was taken to an inTirmarv in Phnrlpstnn ahnnt a week ago in what appeared to be a very serious condition, is improving rapidly. Mr C J Rollins caipe up from Lamberts receently and spent parts of two days in town. The stock-holders of the Farmers and Merchants Bank held their regular annual meeting on the 10th ir.st. So many stock-holders attended that it was found necessary to have a larger place for the meeting than che banking house affords, therefore the session was held in the Knights of Pythias hall.
