Thackeray created quite erroneous Impressions of himself by often Indulging In Irony In the presence of people who were Incapable of understanding it Ooe curious Instance which be gave was this: Thackeray had been dining at tbe Garrlck and was talking in the smoking room after dinner with various club acquaintances. One of them happening to have left his cigar case at home, Thackeray, though disliking the man. who was a notorious tuft hunter, good natnredly offered him one of bis cigars. Tbe man accepted the cigar, bat not finding It to bis liking, bad tbe bad taste to say to Thackeray. "1 say. Thackeray, you won't mlud ray saying 1 don't think much of this cigar?" Thackeray, no doubt irritated at the man's ungraciousness and bear- i ing In miud his tuft bunting predilections. quietly responded, "You ought to, my good fellow, for It was given me by a lord " Instead, however, of the tmnr the dolt initnedl ately attributed tbe remark to snob- I blshness on Thackeray's part and to the end of his days went about declaring that "Thackeray bad boasted that he had been given a cigar by a lord." Who Got th? Babyf Once upon a time a crocodile stole a baby and was about to -uake n dl'tuer of It The frantic mother ccgged go piteously for the child that the crocodile said: j "Tell me one troth and you shall have your baby again." The mother replied, "You will not give him back to me." "Then." said the crocodile, "by our agreement 1 shall keeD hlin. for If you have told the truth 1 am oot going to give him back, and if it is a lie 1 have also woo." But the mother said. "If 1 told you the truth .vou are bound by your promise. and if it is not the truth it will nor be a lie until you bare given me my child" I Who got the baby? No Sons* of Proportion. The young man who had spent bis efforts for several years without result in studying art was talking with his practical uncle, who had patiently paid the bills. "Of course." said the young artist "1 know 1 haven't made much of a go of it, but I dou't think you ought to advise me to try something else. Yon know it's best to put all your eggs in j one basket and watcb tbat basket." "Cfti! Tbat may be. Charlie; but i ron ovar think how foolish It Is to ' put so many baskets around one ban { tam egg?" .. ??? Applied History. i First Professor? My dear colleague I'm i little puzzled.
