EDUCATIONAL CONDITIONS j In Williamsburg as Viewed by Expert Teacher-Some Bouquets. Concerning the trustees' meeting; held here Thursday, August 4. Prof W K Tate writes as follows to the: I , ^ Columbia State: Thursday was spent in Kingstree with the summer school and the i trustees of Williamsburg county, ; who met in joint session. The meeting of the trustees of this county was one of the most significant events ^Afhieh has come under my notice. ^Though Williamsburg is a distinctly : rural county, in the movement for the consolidation of schools it. perhaps, leads the State. In the county there are eight or ten strong community schools, which have been formed by the consolidation of smaller schools. The first of these schools to be organized was the one at Rome, which now has as its principal Mr 0 M Mitchell, a graduate of Wofford College. It employs six other teachers, maintains a high school and.although it is twenty-five ! miles from a railroad, claims the 1 distinction of preparing more pupils for college than any other school in Uic vruuxii iuc ptupiv v* v*?vwv solidated community schools are very proud of them and would under no circumstances return to the small neighborhood school. The establishment of these schools has caused rapid appreciation in land values in the neighborhood, and settlers are attracted to these communities because of their school advantages. Superintendent McCullough is assisting in the organization of consolidated schools in other parts of Williamsburg county, and expects within the next few years to have every district in the county supplied with an efficient long-term school. The trustees of the county at their meeting in Kingstree formed a permanent organization, of which Mr B B Chandler of Rome was elected president. They will meet twice during the year, and will discuss the problems which arise in the work of the rural school trustees. A special ^committee was appointed to draft aj .ABotitntinn on/j H\7_l?\1"<S tf? Kp DIV- i i' CUUdtlbUtivti u?iu ksj it*?.w .v ! s sented at the next meeting. A special committee was appointed to se-;' ^ cure information which will enable 1 the trustees of the county to co-op- ' erate in the purchase of school desks 1 and other school supplies. The trus11 tees of this county are exhibiting an ability to co-operate which may well 1 be emulated hy the other counties of ' the State. Several other counties have formed these associations of school trustees, and it is hoped that by the end of this year every county will have such an association. The formation of such organizations is W one of the most significant move- ' ments now in progress. During the last ten years the town of Kingstree has more than trebled its population. This has been done J without the development of any factories or new industries, which would attract a population. 1 asked the hotel keeper in Kingstree for his explanation of the rapid growth of the place. He attributed it to two 1 things: First, the agricultural pros- 1 perity ir. Williamsburg county and 1 the consequent increase in import- 1 anee of Kingstree as a trading cen- i ter; and, secondly, the good schools of Kingstree had attracted to the town many people who wished to use its^educational advantages. Both in the town and in the rural com- 1 1 117*117 munity are exemplified in w imams- | burg county the fact that the school 1 is the inost valuable business asset i % of the community. If Countv Super* I intendent McC'ul lough and the trus-ij tees t.f Williamsburg county con- 1 tinue their present progressive jxdi- ] i ov, this county may soon be the 1 "fltodel for the whole State. j Life on Panama banal t has had one frightful drawback?ma- f Iarial trouble?that has brought suf-! fering end death to thousands. Here it is: On Tuesday, August 9, our entire sale amounting to 58,195 pounds averaged $10.67 per hundred. On that day we sold at public auction ungraded leaves as high as 22 *c and 27c per pound. A few days since we sold our whole curing of graded tobacco ;.i at average of 36c per pound. The reason why we do these things is because Lea & Tredway are born warehousemen and have had m<irp ??vjv>ripnrv? handling South Carolina tobacco than any two men in the State. Their new auctioneer is the talk of the country. We are selling a bigger per cent of the crop this year than ever before. Don't be afraid of over-working us.
