Lake City, August 17:?Mr W B McCants of Rosemary was noted in town Saturday. Recently several citizens, invariably male citizens, have seen massive airships and monster balloons.loadea with people and driven by throbbing engines, pass over town at night. The brand used has not been announced. Dr A H Williams has again been summoned to the bedside of his \fiac T n/?v Williamc ot I tageville. Miss Williams is seriously ill. Mr George Huggins, who suffered several days with pneumonia, died last Wednesday at his home on Valley street. He was about forty-five years of age and left a wife and several children. The rain that fell here last Friday afternoon is pronounced by practically every one the heaviest ever seen. An ordinary rain is now spoken of as a shower; this one was literally a cloudburst. No other name is appropriate. For an hour it rained as if the heavens had opened and pour? ed out every drop of water in the surcharged clouds. Some young men caught out in the open declared that the water fell on and around them so heavily that hreathing was difficult and they felt almost as if they might drown. Roofs leaked, eaves' gutters overflowed, the eight and ten inch sewer pipes were se- J verely taxed and the big sewer at i 'Thomas street overflowed and at j Main street, where it is twelve feet; deep, it had six feet of water in it. Nobody knows just how much water J fell and estimates differ widely.; However, the best estimates seem4 safe in placing it at live to six inches, j Many are stout in contending for | eight to ten inches. Mrs Stewart, wife of Mr Hamer Stewart, died Saturday at her home about four miles east of town. She was Miss Weimis of Springfield. Orangeburg county, and had been married only a short while. Mrs J B DuRant and children have gone to St Mai thews on a visit. Mr William McGee, whose home is near Bass's bridge, has bought a house and lot on Beauregard street and will mow the e 1 efore long. Mr J T Huggins of Georgetown has purchased from Mr Ira C Gaskins the lot and residence at the southwest corner of Acline avenue and Fair view street. Mr and Mrs -J L Stuckey visited near Indiantown church Sunday. Mrs Max Rich of Georgetown is in town with friends. Misses Cora Connor of Bennettsville an<i I.uia Connor of Snioaks are visiting their college mates, the Misses Hinnant. Miss Cora Richev.formerly of this town but now of Camden, is spending some time with friends here. Mr Porcher Hale of Mt Pleasant visited here last week. Mr and Mrs (i L Sauls left Satur day, afternoon for Hot Springs, Ark., the pM home of Mrs Sauls and where her mother still lives. After spendsome time with relatives there, they will go to Baltimore and New York j U-fore returning home. Mr Clarence Hancock, who lives a t"t??-? *1 'I? He had boardel the "'Palmetto Limited" and was standing on the platform of a car as t ie train was pulling out. While passing the Main street crossing he fell from the car to the ground. Ky a stroke of good fortune he landed in such a manner that nothing more than a severe shaking up resulted. Mr W H King was in Columbia , last week. W L B. NEWS NOTES FROM ANDREWS. Municipal Improvements Galore -Rapid Growth of Thriving Town. Andrews, August 15: ? Mr Ed Cooper, of the Suttons section, has t -- ! 1-. J nis store nouse nearly eumiJieieu. He will occupy it as a general store and green grocery. Mr Cooper bought several lots here last January when the Dr Lee property was sold and we understand he wiis build in the near future on each of them. We welcome all such men as Mr Cooper to join with us. I understand that our town officials will spend $5,000 on the improvement of the streets and general improvements of our town. There have already been many im provements made, to the great gratification of the people generally. The entire town has been ditched and drained thoroughly. W*e believe within five years we shall have a town second to none in the State. When over $5,000 has been spent on our town upon the first year's improvement you will note quite a change. The general health of the community is good; our town is thoroughly disinfected every week, aid we have good sanitary ordinal :ces which are fully enforced. Our population has increased threefold within two years and prospects indicate a proportionate increase for the next two years. Moreover we hope to see a court house and jai! here within the next three years. Crops in this section are still thriving. I believe in spite of the dreadful wet season nearly a full crop will be made. Mr Hamp Plumer of Texas is visiting relatives in this community. Mr Plumer was born and reared in i . __ i :.i j i ?t:i ; this [own anu resiueu nere uiuu when his parents moved to Texas. This is his first visit to his old home since his departure. An automobile belonging to a business man in town, while being driven by its owner last Saturday night.ran into a negro's horse and buggy and it came near being a serious alt'air. It completely demolished the nejrro's buggy but luckily did not injure the horse. The gasoline horse is too 'much for an old. dilapidated buggy. Sl/BSCP.IBKR.
