M8IETY OF NEWS 1 FROM LAKE Gin, i ??? ? MR. AND MRS.HUGGINS BEREAVED -CIVIC LEAGUE AND TRL'CK* ERS* ASSOCIATION FORMED. Lake City, April 4:?The infant twins of Mr and Mrs G C Huggins died last week. The little boy and girl lived only three or four d?YR. In the identically same manner this unfortunate couple have lost seven children. The walls of Mr Sauis's new hotel are going up right along. One portion of the building has been carried two stories high and the and the roof put on. The other portion is now being pushed. Mr Sauls says the entire structure will be completed in about three months. Messrs Cottingham and Finnegan, cashier and assistant, both being shut in by measles, Mr B Wallace Jones, Jr., has charge of the affairs of the Fanners and Merchants Bank for the time being. "Judge" 0 S Baldwin went to Kingstree Fridav on business. t Mr Kenneth McCutchen is visiting here from Latta. He is at Mr J A Green's. The ladies of the towm are getting up a civic league for the improvement of the physical appearance of the streets, squares, etc. The first mating was held last Monday afternoon. The idea embodied in the purpose of the league is being received with enthusiastic earnestness. When other towns "get there," just look around and lake City will; be found there, too. There was quite an enjoyable entertjiinment at the school au- j ditorium Friday night for the bene-' fit of the Lades' Civic League. The i leading feature was a comedy en- J titled "A Box of Monkeys." This | play kept the audience roaring from beginning to end. The proceeds of the entertainment will be devoted to improving the park at n the-foot of Main street. Constable L M Belk last Saturday seized a package containing a liquor branded "160 proof alcohol," j and the printed receipe accompany-1 ing the stuff stated that the liquor (said to measure one and a half "gallons) would make twenty gallons of good whiskey. DrJD Whitehead, who moved way from here to Augusta some months ago, has decided that he will undo his mistake, so far as he can. Ee has returned. Needless to say he is welcome. All who knew him are glad to 9ee him here again ?and hope he will nevermore entertain the idea of going away. The census enumerators for this section are: Lake City township, Liie R Truluck; Sumter township, W J Smiley; Lee township, W E Cooke: Lakg township, S J SingletaE S Oliver, Esq., who has opened a law office in Florence, was noted here one day last weeek. The Lake City Truckers' Association has resolved to see what can be done towards securing more reasonable freight and express rates. The truck farmers have grown tired of working for the railroad and express companies and have determined to ascertain whether or not the profits may be divided on a more equitable basis than now obtains. It seems hard to sell a basket of beans and give the carrier more than h^lf the price received for the stuff. The mem bers of the association regard the movement an important one and they are going into the matter in earnest and not as child's play. It means that this section will either become a great truck growing center, or vegetable raising must be earned on elsewhere. The high rates and excessive requirements as to refrigerator loads, have already caused many acres of strawberries to be ploughed up, and present conditions give little encouragement to vegetable growers. Now, however, the critical moment has arrived and either the farmers or the carriers must give in. The carriers may win, corporations are powerful and \ * they fight every effort to reduce dividends, and fight hard. However, if they win, the goose that lays the golden eggs will probably be killed in the winning. The association has resolved to make a straight fight anil a business fight, open, square and legitimate. Proceedings will he instituted right away before xthe Interstate Commerce Commission, and for that purpose Messrs \Y L Pass and D M Epps weift to Washington Monday night. The first named will represent the association before the commission, and trio latter win lenn all necessary assistance in preparing the complaint and explaining the rates, etc. Mr Jo'itt J Brown of Florence, an honorable and honored member of the "Old Guard," was noted here last week. Mr Brown belongs to the two greatest'classes of men this country ever produced?the "oldfield school teachers" and the old soldiers of the Confederacy. W. L. B. EVER HAVE IT? I had -a lameness across my loins and such severe backaches that I could not turn in bed.
