These form- of athletics are being highly developed here by the students. The faculty has arranged a course of lectures, one to occur every Thursday night in the university chapel. This course is entertaining and is apprec iated by all the students. Our professors are ready and willing to go to any place where they are wanted to deliver lectures and there will be no charge whatever for cither the talk or illustrated lecture. Right here 1 would advise the people of my county to take advantage J of this geueious offer. Our Y M C A is in a flourishing j condition. It has placed on foot a movement to get a Y M C A building i on the campus and everything looks 1 bright for the future of this nnpor- j tant part of student life. A full course of engineering has | been recently added to our curricu| lum and Dean Colcock of this de-. partinent also offers a special course in road construction. These new | courses are looked upon with pride, j for they will benefit our State mate-' rially in giving us good roads and ^ ^lihproved waterways. There is in the course of erection a large building to be used as a science hall. When conipieted this will be by far the' handsomest building 011 the campus. We are in great need of new dormitories 011 account of the great increase in the number of students. 1 In many cases there are three stu- i dents in one room and this is too 1 ... 1 many tor their comfort and well-1 being. We also need a new gymna* I < 6ium. as the present oue is not large j enough and u otherwise not adapted ! to our requirements. We have this year a new physical;" director, who comes well recommended. He already has his classes doing excellent work and has awakened in j' the students a greater desire to en- j gage in the much needed physical culture. We were greatly honored lately by a visit from President Taft, who on ! hia toijr around the city stopped on i campus and gave us a talk. To share in the honors of the occasion we had with us on the campus the students from other institutions in the city. Mr Taft was heartily received by the students. He made a short but very interesting and impressive talk, and in closing he left this bene-1 diction with us: "I wish the greatest! prosperity to this university. Mr Motley is in jail and is as com-1 fortahle and cheerful as could be expected under the circumstances. He has received calls from a num-| ber of his Lake City friends and when a representative of The Kecord visited him in his cell he found him well supplied with fruit, caudy. ci j gais and reading matter tiiat his friends had brought or sent to him. Much sympathy is expressed for the unfortunate young man?who is only twenty-four years old?by a great many people in the county and every kindness and privilege consistent with their otlicial dutv are shown him bv our big-hearted andconsid-i i ?rate Sheriff and his courteous aud kind-hearted warden,Mr R M Vause. Mr Motley is not talking for publication. He is expecting his father, who lives in Danville,Va,in a day or two,and when they have conferred it is probable that application lor bail will be made. Editor Count}' Record:? i herewith send you P O money order for one dollar and ' twenty-five cents. The dollar will shove my subscription tor The Record to February G, F-'IJ, and the balance, cents, is for t[ie Woman's World and the two premiums you otfer with it and Tile Record. Now I wish to have a little talk with the many readers of Tile Record. At the present price of cotton it will take only about \ lbs of cotton to pay for The Record one whole year, i fifty-two papers. Now. dear reader.-, surely no one of us can i ^Uiin at getting such a : wide-; ' weekly newspaper n> the (L,?. old County Record a whole year for ie.-s than eight pounds of cotton 1 Let every I one of us prove to the editor that we appreciate his untiring energy and zeal in bringing out such a paper as The Record by sending all we owe him and one dollar to pay for the paper one year in advanrc. Lei's do it before the l.'Jlst of December, 1009. and make him feel that we are a set of appreciative men, and I will say women, too. Now, we all know that it j costs a good deal to publish a newspaper like The Kecord and tlie editor must have his bread and butter. lie has to pay all the men who help get the paper out, and how is he to meet his expenses if he can't get what is honestly due him for his labor y In conclusion, there is no just reason or cause for the year 1009 to close and leave any of us owing* for our paper, since it takes so little of our cotton to pay for it. neither is it just or right for us to refuse to pay for the paper when we can pay for it so easily.
