The fifteen counties in which prohibition went into effect on November 15 have a stringent law to obey. After one of the hardest fought battles known in South Carolina legislation an act was passed at the last session of the General Assembly providing for the vote to be taken in the several counties on the liquor question. Fifteen counties voted out the dispensary and six retained the system. The only counties having dispensaries now are: Charleston, Richland, Florence, Georgetown, Aiken and Beaufort. Now the other fifteen counties which had dispensaries will have to stand by the enactment of the Legislature, while the six counties retaining theMispensarv system will be under the provisions of the Carey-Cothran act. The principal provision of the new prohibition act that has caused much comment is the first section. It reads as follows: "Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the the State of South Carolina, That all alcoholic liquors and beverages, whether manufactured within this State or elsewhere. or any mixture by whatsoever name, which if drunk to excess will produce intoxication, are hereby declared to be detrimental, and their use and consumption to be against the morals, good health and safety of the State, and contraband. That it shall be unlawful for any person, firm, corporation or association within this State to manufacture, sell, barter, exchange, receive, accept, give away to induce trade, deliver, store, keep in possession in this State, furnish at public places or otherwise dispose of any spirituous, malt, vinous, fermented, brewed or other liquors and beverages, or any compound or mixture thereof which contains alcohol aiid is used as a beverage, and which if drunk to excess will produce intoxication, except as hereinafter provided." DIED ID DEW MEXICO. I { Remains of Mr. Sam fluitf Sent Back to His Old Home for Inlermenf. Back to his old home in Williamsburg county?a journey of about 2,000 miles?came the body of Samuel M Fluitt last Sunday night from Silver City, New .Mexico, to rest under his native sod in the old Williamsburg cemetery, near where the deceased was born and spent his early manhood. Mr Fluitt enlisted as a volunteer at the breaking-out of the Spanish-American war nearly twelve years ago. lie accompanied his regiment to Cuba and while lingering in the "Pearl of ; the Antilles'' met his fate in the form of one of the native belles. A rom/ wooing followed, which e..aeu .n his liappv marriage. a notice of which appeared in The Jlecord shortly after the event occurred some ten years ago. From Cuba, it seems, he went to New Mexico, where, we understand, his wife pieceded him in death about six months ago. They left no children. Mr Fluitt's death occurred on Friday, November 12, and at his request the remains were sent back to old Williamsburg, where his thoughts naturallv turned on the eve of the long journey to "that bourne from whence no traveler returns." Mr Fluitt was a comparative-' ly young man, being only forty years old. His father was Mr Jas H Fluitt, who died some years ago in this county. Mr Sam Fluitt's nearest relatives are three sisters, Mrs Fowler McKnight ot Greelyville; I Mrs J II Ilanna of Benson and i Miss Miriam Fluitt of Kingstree. The funeral services, conducted by Rev W A Fairy, took place at 3:30 p m Monday at the ' cemetery. The Late Governor John A- Johnson. There was something about the I late Governor John A Johnson (that took hold of t heart of the nation. Not sin*, the death j of President McKinley has a pub lie man been so deeply regretted by the people of his own State and of the Middle West; all unite in mourning the loss of the Governor of Minnesota.* That peculiar curl of his lips, ; which strangers sometimes de' scribed as sarcastic, was mere; ly the precursor of a genial smile. | His warm heart was kindliness never failed to win friends. Even an acquaintance of many years loved Governor Johnson better every time he looked into those blue eyes that were the reflection of a noble soul. * * * In a sleeping car, on my way ! to Chicago, one night, I found i him deeply immersed in the j pages of a closely printed book. i Needless to say,it was "solid reading matter," for every moment jof his life was usefully spent. ! Later the little volume was laid | aside, and the Governor began ! a conversation which continued j far into the morning hours; there was always an earnestness i in his words, and a fine quality I in his thought, that impressed i all who heard him speak. He was a true and fine type of country editor who gets close to the people, and the story of his life is one of the romances that | illuminate the history of the nation.?Joe Mitchell Chappie in "Affairs at WashingtonNovember , National Magazine.
