NOV. 11. 1909. man Kockcfeller has looked horns wit!) the hook-worm. If the hook worm were a competitor hi the o;l business we'd bet that the parasite would soon see his finish. Another meeting will be held nex: Monday to try to perfect the organization of tile Law and Order league for Williamsburg county. We hope to see a large attendance at this meeting, which should interest every citizen of the county who favors the better en forcenu-r.t of our laws. The meeting will be held in tne court house at 12 o'clock noon. . A man in Washington, D. C., is suing a bank cashier for $10,-1 000 damages, alleging that the; bauker, to emphasize- an argu-' meut, hit him with a "bunch of money." There are about three or four hundred 'Slow coaches ' on our, subscription list who are perfectly at liberty to pelt us with anything like a "bunch of money," i from one dollar up. Selah. Las: week's issue of the Abbeville Medium contains four proclamations from Governor Ansel offering rewards fur "the apprehension. deliver} and conviction" of murderers at large from that county, the crimes having been committed between 1900 and 1909. It would be interesting to kuow how many murders were committed all told during the period referred to. and what the authorities of Abbeville were doing to allow four red-handed , murderers to escape. The Little Gate City. Florence, the little (late City of the Pee Dee, did herself proud in the entertainment given President Taft, as well as the thousands of strangers within her gates on Monday and Tuesday. It was a pretty big undertaking for a town the size cf Florence to take care of so big a crowd and give all a good time, but the citizens [practically formed themselves into a corn Jiittce of the whole to see that no visitor lacked attention. It is only by such enterprise, backed by the concerted action of its people, that a town or a community can accomplish things worth while. The Pee Dee convention was an occasion icng to be remembered, and among the crowds that thronged the little city, we feel sure that nom* went away with other that. a dec}* feeling of kindness for Florence ami her hospitable people. Not Overstocked. It has been bronght to our attention that the article published in our news columns last weeV with reference to the county dispensary stocks on hand and lia bilities is misleading, at least so fur as this county is concerned. The clerk of the Williamsburg dispensary board informs us that tile liabilities of the dispensaries in this county on October 1 amounted to but t?. r that debt There was cash deposited in banks amounting to about On November 1, there was on hand and in the three dispensaries about *7,000 worth of liquor, which at the present rate of celling will be nearly all closui out by No win ber 15. Moreover, we are further [informed that at the winding up of the business there will be somei thing like $10,000 to be turned ? ' joter to the towns and the county. The article referred to was pub' t lished in several of the daily papers and was supposed to be based ; on data obtained from Auditoi West in Columbia. I Letter to a Farmer Boy. * No man ever makes a big success ' in anything, by accident. If some! body has stuffed your head with [ the idea that men succeed in this world by luck, you may just put it down that somebody doesn't know what he is talking about. Whether you are going to be a farmer or a College president, \ou must fit yourself for whatever you are going to be. No matter what sort of work you are doing, try to do it a little better than the other fellow. Emerson says somewhere that if a man can do anything supremely well, no matter if he live in a wilderness, the world will make a beaten path to his door. And this is very true. I rode the other day to see a farmer who lives not many >miles from where I am writing and found that the Governor of the State had just been there to see his corn crop, and a great number of other men had come miles and miles to see this man's farm. And why? Simply because he had done more with an acre than any other man in the comity. . If your brother wants to go tc to.vn to clerk in a store and measure calico U3 somebody else's hired man, let him go. You Stay on the farm where you can be independent, living under your own vine and tig tree, and where you car take part in all these great movements that are going to count foi so much in human progress aud in the world's development these next fifty years. We have had too many farmer boys already, who have made secondrate merchants and clerks, win might have made prominent farmers and men of influence in their connties. It is a great deal better and mori honorable to raise Southern meal than it is to sell Western meat. It is a great deal better and more useful to be a leader in showing how to make more cotton per acri tliau it is to merely measure off i certain uumber of yards of cottor goods when a buyer wants it. Don't give up the independence oi furni life. In the city shops and stores only a small proportion ol the workers own their own homei or have any chance to do work that counts for much ia these great progressive movements we have been ; discussiLg. The boy who is shul up in a factory in the South ha; only one chance of usefulness and independence for twenty that you and other farmer boys have.?Ral eigh (y. C.) Hot Supper at Bloomlogvale. The hot supper which was given at Mr \V 0 Camliu's residence Friday uight, November 5, was a most enjoyable affair as well as a success financially, the proceeds amounting ' to the tidy sum of ?132.31. The supper was given for the benefit of the Smith school, which is taught by Aliss Leland Segers and is getting along nicely both in poiut of attendance and along educational lines. ' Several gentlemen from Kingstree attended t:.e hot supper and all speak highly in praise of the excellent supper served and the pleasure of the occasion frotr a social standpoint.
