We have also been through a strenuous and exhausting campaign, which besides the gratuitous work done, has cost us considerable loss , financially. We now ask those whose battle we have fought to ^ * stand by us, and even if you are f not in a position to patronize i our advertising columns, every 1 one of you can help us by dealing wiiii the progressive business men who invite your c patronage by advertising with i * us and speaking a kind word ? to them for the paper. i Mr and Mrs W H Cole of Lakei Jity visited the family of Mr Ai ) Coker Saturday. Pursuant to the call of bupt. .) (i McCullough, on Monday August 30, at 11:30 a m., many of the trustees and teachers of Williamsburg county, together| with a goodly number of the patrons and friends of education, gathered in the spacious < auditorium of Kingstree High school. Many prominent speakers had been secured for the occasion, some being sent by the State Educational Campaign Committee, while some was secured by Mr McCullough from our own county. The large number ot people in attendance is an indication that we have better times coming in our county; because when people take more interest .lie education ot their childien we know that we have better times coming. After telling us something of the progress made in Williamsburg. Mr McCullough introduced the speakers for the occasion, as follows: A II Gasque, superintendent of education of Florence county, the Rev J W Truluck, "the model trustee of Scanton,'' Mrs Mary T Nance Daniel; I'rof G T thigh, of Columbia College; O M Mitchell, principal of Union High school, Rome; Dr S C Mitchell, president S C University; Prof J G Clinkscales, of Wofford College. All made very interesting talks and we trust that much good will result from the efforts of these people. Dr Mitchell nairl nc a vorv hirh romnliment I ? ? * J ? -?" 1 by saying that he hoped he would soon have as nice an auditorium at the University as that of Kingstree High school. Truly wonderful is the progress made in our State along educational lines as told by Mrs Daniel and Prof Clinkscales. But still we have done little as compared with some of the other States. South Carolina is still near the bottom of the ladder in point of literacy. . Immediately fter the speaking the ladies . of the local Civic League served luncheon in the school house to the trustees and teachers. The ladies deserve much credit for this, as it enabled the trustees to hold their semi-annual meeting the same day. The Trustees' association for Williamsburg county held a meeting immediately after dinner and discussed the school conditions of the county. No business was transacted but much good accomplished in the exchange of ideas. J G C.
