EVENTS OF INTEREST AROUND HARPERS.1 EXPRESS OFFICE REOPERiED?HARPERS SAYS NO CONSOLIDATION?WORK 1 < C'E GEORGETOWN COAINGANG. : < Harpers, .July 5:?The Fourth of < July beiug on Sunday, everything . passed off quietly at this place. On , Saturday night, the 3rd inst, there ( was a considerable display of tire* , works on the streets by the young ( people. Sunday was enjoyed by all, . being an ideal cool day for the Sea- ( son. Watermelons were plentiful, and ( ^ everyone seemed to enjoy the first ( melons of the season. , By the way, Mr Editor, thegreat> vital question that so much concern- i * ed our people has been forever settled?that of joiniug our town and Rosemary together. Our freeholders have lust flatly refused to ask the i town of Harpers to order an election on this subject, so our beloved town, Rosemary, has lo3t out in its effort 1 to join our towns. Still we hope to I see Rosemary incorporated to herself I and grow and flourish like the green bav tree bv the water's edge. Oar express cilice at this place was ordered to be discontinued on June 30, 1009, but by the untiring efforts of our people aud the Intendant of the town of Harpers, the of \ fice will be continued as before. We ^xtend our thanks generally to Superintendent Buckner of Wilmington, N C, for this courtesy showu our people, also Route Agent J R Wofford deserves much credit for his efforts. This office wa3 ordered to be removed to Rosemary. We are glad to announce to the public that our express office will still remain at Harpers; also a rural -delivery ruail route will go out trom Harpers covering a 20 mile territory with about 120 families to be served. This will prove a great saving of time to our country people and is a much needed convenience to the people of this part of the county. Mr J B Johnson, the Georgetown 1 ^ , oouuty supervisor, has two road ma- ' * ehiues with 12 mules attached thereto now at work in the town of 1 V Harpers. Kia most competent superintendent, Mr 0 W Matthews, is doing some much needed work here iu ' town. He is one of the best road * builders in the State, aud his work c will show fox itself. The towu will have several streets graded and all ' of our public roads put in line shape. * Mr Matthews has already done some ? work here that will be remembered ^ for years to come. We have some roads over in old Williamsburg coun- | ty that certainly ueed attention and our people are becoming impatieut, but we hope our time will come. Subscribe it. ( SuftOQS Sittings. 1 Suttous, July 5: ?Farmers have about tiuished laying by their crops t and are looking forward to the pic- ( nics to be held around this neighborhood. ^ Misses Beulab Hinnant aud Ma- l nette McFlveeu of Lake City are vis- j xting at the Hinnant home this ( week. f Miss Ruth Hinuant has returned \ ^ home after a pleasant visit to rela- | lives near Sumter. t Mrs T S Carter and daughter,Miss Kffie May Joues of Lancaster, are visiting at the home of their uncle, Mr II E Ogburn. Mr Marion Ogburn of Rosemary j is spendiug a few days with his par- < ents, Mr and Mrs H E Ogburn. s Mr Bryaut Hinnant spent Satur- j day and Sunday in Charleston. ^ Mr and Mrs J Sheppard and sis- ] ter, Miss Julia, of Georgetown are visiting Mr William Byrdic. 1 Rev W T Patrick tilled his regular appointment here Sunday after noon. Starlight. I j < Many people with chronic throat 1 and lung trouble have found comfort and relief in Foley's Honey and Tar as it cures obstinate coughs after other treatment has failed. L M 1 Ruggles, Reasnor, Iowa, writes: "The doctors said I had consumption, and I got no better until I took Foley's ( Honey and Tar. It stopped the hemorrhages and pain in my lungs and they are now as sound as a bullet." 1 D C Scott < CALHOUN COUNTY TROUBLES Should Be a Warning to Voters In Proposed Rutledge County. They are having a parrot aud: monkey time in Calhoun county over, the alleged deceptive methods to se-! cure the necessary vote to establish Calhoun county with St Matthews is the county seat, and already some ire taking about having another clectiou to disband Calhoun and go back to Orangeburg and Lexington ! counties. St Matthews wauted to be i county seat, and, from we can gather from the controversy, its advocates were rather liberal in handing cut promises to the voters living outside of St Matthews, but when the war is over and the victory gained, those who did the promising for St Matthews have been unable to deliver, hence there is a bitter war being waged to prevent a bond issue to raise the necessary funds to erect public buildings. Tbis should be a warninj>>,-N^ friends in Sandy Grove. lay no stress upon the 1 those interested in euhancioj value of Lake City building*, they want to become a p.-' new county well and goody ^**;y snouiu nave mis uesire a. -mi my promise l,ake City might. ,?Ke ibout contributing the money for | public buildings. Then, too, if they I lesire to go into the new county, ;hoy should not be deceived into the! belief that by annexing themselves t> Rutledge they will escape their proportion of Clarendon's bond issue. They must kuow, if they vote them>elves into Rutledge, by doing so ;hey also consent to be taxed for public buildings in both counties, votiug upon themselves a double tax. whereas Lake City and the other Dortions of the territory going to nake Rutledge county will uot have ;o be double taxed, because Williamsburg has uo bonded debt, and they vill only have to pay the siugle tax, | aut Sandy Grove township is in Clarendon, where there is a bonded ndebtedness, which makes Sandy Grove necessarily a part of the contract, and bound to it for forty years, vitli no chance of escape. But if Sandy Grove is willing to take upon herself an additional taxation for ?uhim buildings in Rutledge, it is ill right with us,especially since they io it with their eyes open. Our object in discussing this mater is prompted by a desire to keep Clarendon iutact, also to keep our Sandy Grove friends from becoming Misnared mto a trap as the people of Calhoun were, and when too late re- 1 ;ret having voted themselves into ,ne new county . ? Manning Times. The State Borrows. Arrangements have been completed by the State of South Carolina to 1 )orrow $200,000 through the Pal- ( netto National bank of Columbia. ; The rate of interest according to the i igreement between the bank and the state will be 3 per cent. This makes i total of $400,000 borrowed this , fear, the first $200,000 loan being lecessary on account of the distribu;ion of the pension money. The pres? snt loau is to meet current expenses ind it is certain that an additional ?100,000 will have to be borrowed >efore the end of the year, bringing ' ;he total up to the statutory limit.
